Ganden Monastery Lhasa
Ganden Monastery is the most special one among the six monasteries of Gelukpa sect, or Yellow sect after the yellow hat the lamas wear. In 1409, it was prepared and built by Master Zongkapa himself who was the founder of Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, so Ganden Monastery is regarded as the ancestral monastery of Gelukpa sect. In Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yongzheng gave Ganden the name of Yongshou which means "ever-lasting longevit".
The location of Ganden monastery is the 3800-meter Wangpo Ri mountain, in Datse county which is 57 km away from Lhasa city. Wangpo Ri mountain looks like a giant elephant which is carrying the architectural complex of Ganden on the back.
According to Tibetan Calendar, October 25th is regarded as Death Anniversary Day to Tsongkhapa. The Big Thangka featuring Buddha is showed in the daytime, while all lamps lit through the night of the Monastery. It is called ¡¡ãLighting Festival¡¡À, which is the most important festival for Ganden.
