Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is at the average elevation of 4000 meters, so the area full of the high altitude, the thin air, the complicated landform, the cold weather, the sand storm, the ice storm, the thunder storm and the altitude wind is always regarded as the most difficult flight region and called as "restricted airspace". The Beijing-Chengdu-Lhasa air route was opened on March 1st, 1965, which connect Tibet with the outside world.

After years'construction, The pattern to Civil Aviation Routes has taken shape. Tourists could fly from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Xining and Kathmandu to Lhasa or from Chengdu to Nyingtri now. In 2010, Kunsha airport of Ali has been opened, which brough more conveniences for the tourists to visit Mt. Kailash.
