It is a wonderful place for trekkers, those who like to get off the beaten track and the bird-watchers. It locates in a large natural bowl, which is about 65km south of Lhasa. One can take a 45-minute hiking to get there from the enc of the motorable road.</p> <p><img height="267" alt="Shugsheb Nunnery" width="400" src="/images/Shugsheb Nunnery/Shugsheb Nunnery.jpg" /></p> <p>In the central hall, there is a three-dimentional mandala of Drolma, together with statues of Guru Rinpoche, Dorje Semba, White Tara and several old lamas. The nunnery represents both Nyingma and Dzogchen schools. Go up the stairs to the right, you can find a chapel with a statue of Machik Labdronma, the famous 11th-century adept who opened up the valley, with a black-and-white photo of one of her reincarnations.</p> <p><img height="267" alt="Mandapa of Shugsheb Nunnery" width="400" src="/images/Shugsheb Nunnery/Mandapa of Shugsheb Nunnery.jpg" /></p> <p>Following the electric poles, one can hike up the hill. After 45 minutes' walking, you can reach the Gangri Tokar shrine, the meditation place of Longchenpa, an important 14th-century Dzogchen lama. The chapel contains a cave shrine and a sacred tree stump, right in front of a rock image of the Dzogchen deity Rahulla.</p> <p>For those skillful hikers they can climb for a couple of hours up to the ridgeline behind. Here the hiker can have a magnificent view of the Kyi-chu Valley. If you are lucky enough to meet a fine weather, you can see the view of snowcapped 7191m Nojin Kangtsang and other Himalayan peaks to the south. If you are energetic then, you can follow the ridgeline to the northwest. After crossing a boulder field and walking for another 15 minutes, you can get to a small hill, with its top covered by a chorten. From the chorten, you can get an epic northwards view to as far as Lhasa.
