Walking for&nbsp; another 10 km, you then reach the spectacular limestone cliffs of the Yerpa Valley, also the location of the famous ancient meditation caves.</p> <p><img height="300" alt="The view of Drak Yerpa.jpg" width="474" src="/images/Drak Yerpa/The view of Drak Yerpa.jpg" /></p> <p>In the Valley are a number of small temples shrines and hermitages. Also, the cliffs contain meditation sites, some of which are thought to be the earliest known meditation sites in Tibet. There are some of them that can be dated back to pre-Buddhist times. Some more famous are connected with Songts&auml;n Gampo, first emperor to unite Tibet. The Dra Yerpa temple here was founded by Monza Triucham, his Tibetan queen.</p> <p>It is said that Songts&auml;n Gampo and his two foreign-born queens have meditated in the 'Peu Marsergyi Temple' and in the 'Chogyel Puk'. People also said they had&nbsp; discovered 'self-originated' symbols of the Buddha-body, speech and mind. Another famous person who meditated here is Padmasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche. He also practiced tantric yoga with his yogini Yeshe Tsogyal here. Totally he spent 7 months in meditation in the 'Dawa Puk', which is considered to be one of his three most important places of attainment. Several of Guru Rinpoche's disciples are also said to have meditated here.</p> <p><img height="300" alt="The Caves" width="458" src="/images/Drak Yerpa/The Caves.jpg" /></p> <p>Thus Yerpa gradually built its reputation as one of the three most important centres of meditation and retreat in Central Tibet. Atisha used to preach extensively in the valley. Unfortunately, most of his hermitage is in ruins. In the 19th century, 300 monks lived hrer. The place was also the summer quarters for the Ramoche Monastery .</p> <p>History also shows that there are temples founded by Songsten Gampo and Trisong Detsen at Yerpa. In the 11th century, Klu-mes Tshul-khrims did some refurbishing.<img height="403" alt="The Buddha" width="300" align="right" src="/images/Drak Yerpa/Drak Yerpa Monastery.jpg" /></p> <p>Below is a quotation by one of Songts&auml;n Gampo's wives, after the born of his only son by Princess of Mang:<br /> &quot;A shrine and a stupa dedicated to the tutelary deity of mother and son were built upon the lap of a rocky mountain that resembled a seated image of the Holy Tara in the region of Yerpa.&quot;</p> <p>After Tsongkapa's reformation, the ancient Kadampa gompa passed to the Gelukpa control. From at least the beginning of the 19th century until 1959, more than 300 monks lived here. The Gyuto Lhasa Tantric College uses here as their summer residence. During the cultural revolution, the gompa was destroyed and the caves ransacked. Then some rebuilding are set on. And now we can see new statues made and images repainted in the caves.</p> <p>Another well-known legendary hero is Gesar of Ling, who is said to have visited the valley. People believe that there are the holes his arrows left in the cliffs, which are the evidence of his presence.</p> <p>It is also said that Lhalung Pelgyi Dorje hid himself here after his assassination of the anti-Buddhist Bon Emperor Langdarma in 842 CE.
