The monastery also had another name spelled &quot;Radreng.&quot;</p> <p>In 1056, the Monastery was founded by Dromt&ouml;npa, Atisha's chief disciple. It was built in the Reting Tsampo Valley, a place in the north of Lhasa, as the seat of the Kadampa lineage. He brought some of Atisha's relics with him. It was the first major monastery of the Sarma revival. After Tsongkapa's reformation of the Kadampa School into the Gelug School, Reting became an important Gelugpa monastery, as well as the seat of the Reting Rinpoche.<img height="261" alt="the full view of Rating Monastery" width="400" align="left" src="/images/Rating Monastey/a2dc4e5c1d3ac4bb.jpg" /></p> <p>&nbsp;The 14th Dalai Lama was found by the Reting Rinpoches. Also, during the minority of a Dalai Lama, the Reting Rinpoches were among the candidates for Regent. Thus, between 1845 and 1855, the Reting Rinpoche was Regent and did the job again from 1933-1947. The latter Regent, the Fifth Reting Rinpoche, was involved in the search for the present Dalai Lama. After finding the boy, he&nbsp; became young Dalai Lama's Senior Tutor. But then he tried tor abdicated the position and was found guilty of colluding with the Chinese. He was arrested and died in a Tibetan prison in 1947. In fact his powerful Shugdenpa accusers are generally held responsible for his murder because they were colluding with the Chinese Ambon. Moreover, they also destroyed the Gelug Reting Monastery and killed many in Lhasa, which lead to the political confusion later.<img height="267" alt="the full view of Rating Monastery" width="400" align="right" src="/images/Rating Monastey/Takstang Monastery Bhutan.jpg" /></p> <p>&nbsp;In 1997, the Sixth Reting Rinpoche died. In January 2001, the Chinese announced that a new incarnation had been chosen as the Seventh Reting Rinpoche. The announcement followed the Karmapa Lama began his flight to India two days before.</p> <p>During the Cultural Revolution, the place was destroyed, but now the construction work is under going.
