It was built in 11th century. The monastery is quite small Sakyapa monastery, accommodating with only 18 monks, most of whom are art specialists of rare mural. Those murals are often a combination of Indian and inner Asian styles. A torch is needed in order to see the murals.<br /> The main statue in the assembly hall is Dorje Chang and Drapa Ngonshe, the monastery&rsquo;s founder. It is also of interest to see the oracle costume and mirror, with which the oracle would discern his visions. All the remains of the murals are hold in the inner sanctum. And the best of the murals are on the back wall.<br /> Following the steps outside and to the left of the main entrance, you can reach a side protector chapel. Taking the passage at the back of the chapel, you can get to a rooftop chapel and kora.<br /> The route to the monastery begins form the highway, walking to its south for 2 km. Then walk from the modern town of Dranang into the old town, and you'll find the road curves to the right. For those who want to spend one night there, the Zhuzhou Binguan is recommended. It is a clean modern place with spacious-tripled dorms. The location of the place is at the junction with the main highway.</p> <p><strong><img height="321" alt="The mural" width="300" align="left" src="/images/Dranang Monastery/The mural in Dranang Monastery2.jpg" />Jampaling Kumbum</strong><br /> If you have the interest in antient relics, you can wisit the ruins of the Jampaling Kumbum. It sits on the hillside, a half-hour walk southeast of Dranang. Jampaling Kumbum was built in the year 1472. It has a 13-storey chorten, which was one of the largest in Tibet. The attendant monastery of Jampaling Kumbum has totally 200 monks. It would be worthwhile to climb up the hillside above the ruins and get an overview of the scale of the site, for it is one of the most beautiful sites in Tibet. <br /> The way to Jampaling is to walk south out Dranang Monastery for a couple of minutes, and then turn left, and follow a path to the base of the ruins, which can be seen on the hillside above.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>The Valley<br /> </strong>The valley is a place for those hiking-lovers. It is not hard for an explorers to stay in the Dranang valley for sometime, as long as he or she has a tent and supplies. One can go hiking through the valley to the village and monastery of Gyeling Tsokpa, which is 8 km from Dranang, and to Dingboche Monastery,&nbsp;&nbsp; which is 14km from Dranang.<br /> Every day at 7am, there will be a direct minibus runs to Dranang from Barkhor Sq in Lhasa. Also, you can take any Tsetang-bound bus to the Dranang junction, and then you can take a short three-wheel motor rickshaw ride, or 20-minute walk to the monastery.
