It is a Buddhist monastery situated 25 km southeast of a bridge. The bridge is about 127 km west of Shigatse, which is on the road to Tingri in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.</p> <p><strong>History </strong><br /> The seat of the Sakya or Sakyapa school of Tibetan Buddhism was founded in 1073. The founder was Konchok Gyelpo, who lived during the time between 1034 to 1102. Konchok Gyelpo was a Nyingmapa monk of the powerful noble family of the Tsang. He then became the first Sakya Trizin. The monastery was once very powerful that the abbots of the monastery governed Tibet during the whole of the 13th century. This took place right after the downfall of the kings. Finally, the rise of the new Gelukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism draw an end to its reign.</p> <p><img height="300" alt="Sakya Monastery" width="479" src="/images/Sakya Monastery/7.jpg" /></p> <p><strong>Structure </strong><br /> The monastery is famous for its medieval Mongolian architecture, which is quite different from that of temples in Lhasa and Yarlung. Unfortunately, most of the buildings of the monastery are in Ruins during the Cultural Revolution. The Lhakang Chempo, or the Sibgon Trulpa is the only surviving building now. In 1268, Ponchen Sakya Sangpo built a cave in the mountainside. Then in the 16th century, the cave was restored. In the cave there are artworks that could probably represent the highest level of this kind in all of Tibet. Some of these artworks are well preserved till today.</p> <p><img height="280" alt="Sakya Monastery" width="481" src="/images/Sakya Monastery/20091110151034346.jpg" /></p> <p>The floor space of the monastery is amazing.
