It was set up by Dorsum Qamba, the well-known disciple of Dapo Lhagyi, an eminent monk of Gagyu Sect. And it has profound historic significance.</p> <p>Since it was the first monastery that initiated the Living Buddha reincarnation system in the history of Tibetan Buddhism, it had profound and lasting significance to picking up the religious leader adopting the Living Buddha reincarnation system in Tibetan Buddhism. As an ancient monastery of Gagyu Sect, Garma Monastery of Gagyu Sect, Garma Monastery lays emphasis on the combination of learning sutras and meditation and the self-cultivation of each monk. The Buddhists having just joined the monastery are called &ldquo;Bande&rdquo;, and then they need several years and even a dozen years to become a member of &ldquo;Ge School&rdquo; After that, they ought to meditate for three years, three moths and three days to get the chance of promoting to the higher management of the monastery, just like Kampo, etc.</p> <p>The architectural relics of Garma Monastery are numerous consisting of the architectures of Coqen, Lharang, Dratsang, and stupa hall, etc. the Coqen Hall has an area of 2240 square meters, with three storeys and the stone and wood construction, and the Sutra Hall and the front corridor are built with Tibetan flat roof; the mail hall is of the wood construction, with the Xieshan style of glazed tile as the roof, and the eaves are supported by the bucket arch. The artisans of Tibet, Han and Naxi nationally designed and built eaves in the shape of lion claw, the beard of dragons and an elephant trunk respectively, which are of the characteristic. This ancient building is a combination of Tibetan, Han and Naxi architectural styles, original in modeling, harmonious. It is the embodiment of the wisdom and talents of the artisans from the three nationalities. The 17-meter-high sculpture of Maitreya enshrined in the main hall is the biggest clay sculpture kept in Chamdo Prefecture.</p> <p><img height="369" alt="Garma Monastery" width="500" src="/images/Garma Monastery/200861323281034946.jpg" /></p> <p>The religious rites taken place in Garma Monastery are of distinguishing features as well. From April to June in Tibetan calendar, Garma Zhigqun holds Abhiseka ceremony for the Living Buddha kins: diamond dagger and Jingmo; on 13th of May in Tibetan calendar, they hold the settling ritual of summertime, chant sutras, and hold the Buddhist Guardian initiation; on 17th of June, they make pilgrimages to the sacred mountains, burn aromatic plant, recite Buddhist scriptures, and cast Lungta flags; in November, they hold Geqen, perform five kinds of sorcerer dance, recite Doma, and sacrifice.Even more, there is Pattra-leaf Sutra which has a history of more than 2,500 years treasured up in Garma Monastery. Pattra-leaf Sutra is a kind of sutra which is written on the leaves of pattra. It was born in India.
