The name of the valley is used especially to the district where it joins with the Chongye River, and spreads out into a large plain (about 2 km wide) before they flow north into the Yarlung Zangbo River or Brahmaputra.</p> <p>The valley sits in Nedong County of Lhokha Prefecture in Tibet. Tsetang, the capital of Lhokha Prefecture sits in the Yarlung Valley. It is one of Tibet's largest cities, and is 183 km southeast of Lhasa. The coordinates of the valley are 29&deg;12&prime;N 91&deg;46&prime;E.</p> <p>Originally, the region were covered forests. The lands here are suitable for agriculture, and now the district is famous for its apples and pears.</p> <p><img height="350" alt="Yarlung Valley on Earth" width="467" src="/images/Yarlung Valley/W020080825509643156682.jpg" /></p> <p><strong>Significance </strong><br /> The Yarlung, together with the adjoining Chongye Valley, formed the original seat of the Yarlung dynasty of Tibetan kings. For a long time it controlled important ancient trade routes into India and Bhutan. Songtsen Gampo, who was the first Tibetan Emperor, moved the capital to Lhasa when he had greatly expanded his territories and power.</p> <p>The valley is often referred to as the &quot;cradle of Tibetan civilisation&quot;. Though it is only 72 km long, it contains a host of important castles, monasteries, temples, meditation caves, peaks and stupas. Among all those sites, three are the most renowned power places, and they are Sheldrak, Tradruk, and Yumbu Lagang or the Yungbulakang Palace. Besides, three major stupas are also in this valley. The three are receptacles for sacred relics: Takchen Bumpa, Gontang Bumpa, and Tsechu Bumpa.</p> <p><strong>The Iron Bridge<br /> </strong>Below the town of Tsetang was a century iron suspension bridge. This bridge was built in th e14th century. It links the Yarlung Zangbo River or Brahmaputra. The famous engineer, Tangtong Gyalpo, is the one who was in charge of the construction of the bridge. The bridge has a span of 150 to 250 metres, but it has only five large stone supports today. Now there is a modern bridge built a few kilometres downstream at Nyago. In 1879, when Sarat Das visited here, he was quite disappointed that he had to take a large boat to ferry across the river, with all the traders and their donkeys on board.</p> <p><img height="350" alt="Yarlung Valley" width="519" src="/images/Yarlung Valley/25641213200804262240134024138209229_000_640.jpg" /></p> <p><strong>Below is his words:</strong><br /> <em>&quot;To the north of the town was the Gonpi ri, one of the favourite resorts of Shenresig (Avalokiteswara), and where, according to tradition, the monkey king and the goblin raised their family of monkeys, from which ultimately descended the Tibetan race.</em></p> <p><em>There are four lamaseries around Tse-tang, and in the town are some fifteen Nepalese, twenty Chinese, and ten Kashmiri shops, besides native traders from all parts of Tibet.
