It is among one of the earliest Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, dating back to as early as the 7th century, that is, during the reign of Songtsen Gampo. The monastery is also one of the "Demoness Subduing" temples of Tibet. King Songtsen Gampo's Chinese wife, Princess Wencheng, once divined the presence of a subterranean demoness down. Then, it was felt that it could enable the Buddhist faith take root in the high plateau.

Throughout the Tibetan history, the monastery has undergone a number of enlargements and reconstructions. During the time of the 5th and 7th Dalai Lamas, the enlargement of the monastery was quite significant. For Tibetan pilgrims, the monastery is a site they must go. The monks living in the monastery are very friendly to welcome foreign visitors and show them around the place. It is really a beautiful place for a brief visit when you are on your way to visit Yumbulagang.

Buddhism has a significant and long-during influence to Tibetan culture. That is why the birthplace of Tibetan culture, Zetang is quite closely related to Buddhism. People believe that in the Yongbulagang, there are three treasures from heaven hidden in. As a result, more and more temples and monasteries were built in this region. Among all the temples and monasteries, the best known ones are Trandruk, Samye and Minchuling.

The Trandruk Monastery was said to have been built under the auspices of Songtsen Gampo. It is located about 2 km from Medong Country. The legend says that the site was originally covered by a lake, which was inhabited by a vicious five-headed dragon. The King Songtsen Gampo changed himself into a huge bird and pecked off the dragon's heads. After the death of the dragon, the lake ran dry, and the monastery was built. In Tibetan language, the word “Trandruk” means "bird" and "dragon".

The Trandruk has a long history. The monastery is patterned after Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa, with a smaller scale. It houses a large number of murals and sculptures. Also, there is a bell cast by the Han monk Ren Qing during the 8th century. There are also a well and stove in the temple. People believe that the well and the stove have been used by Princess Wen Cheng. She had also planted a grove of willow trees. In fact, the princess lived here for some time after her arrival in Tibet, but whether she used the well and stove is only a mysterious story.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
