It takes a four-hour hike from the Gelugpa Chokorgyel Monastery. It sits at an altitude of about 5,300 m, with an area of about 2 square kilometres.

The Legend of Lhamo La-tso
Palden Lhamo, the female guardian spirit of the sacred lake, Lhamo La-tso, was said to have made a promise to the 1st Dalai Lama, Gendun Drup in one of his visions "that she would protect the reincarnation lineage of the Dalai Lamas." Then Gendun Gyatso, the 2nd Dalai Lama, formalised the system that the Regents and other monks would go to the lake to seek guidance through meditation, and they would choose the next reincarnation in this way.

The particular form of Palden Lhamo at Lhamo La-tso is Gyelmo Maksorma, "The Victorious One who Turns Back Enemies". The lake is sometimes referred to as "Pelden Lhamo Kalideva", saying that Palden Lhamo is an emanation of the goddess Kali, the shakti of the Hindu god Siva.

"Lhamo Latso . . . [is] a brilliant azure jewel set in a ring of grey mountains. The elevation and the surrounding peaks combine to give it a highly changeable climate, and the continuous passage of cloud and wind creates a constantly moving pattern on the surface of the the waters. On that surface visions appear to those who seek them in the right frame of mind."

In 1935, the Regent, Reting Rinpoche, received a clear vision of three Tibetan letters, a monastery with a jade-green and gold roof, and a house with turquoise roof tiles. The vision led directly to the discovery of Tenzin Gyatso, the present 14th Dalai Lama.

Chokorgyel Monastery
Chokorgyel Monastery is about 115 kilometres northeast of Tsetang, which is about 160 km southeast of Lhasa. The altitude of the monastery is 4,500 m.

From Chokorgyel Monastery there is an old path, which originally aimed to make easier access for the senior monks to visit the lake. On the half way of the path is Yoni Lake, a diamond-shaped pond fed by glaciers. And a ritual shökde or throne was built on a ridge near the top of the path for the Dalai Lama. It is said that he once sat to divine the future while gazing into the lake, which is about 1 kilometre in front and 150 m lower down. Today, the lake has been buried under a mound of silk scarves.

There is a kora or pilgrimage walk around the lake. Lhamo-tso is famous for the large number of pilgrims coming here every year. They hold the belief that they will be revealed of their future in the skull-shaped mirror of the lake, through their proper devoutness after fasting for three days silently.

Other Sites
There used to be a temple to Maksorma, or Machik Pelha Shiwai Nyamchen, which is an unusually peaceful form of Palden Lhamo. The place is at the eastern end of the lake. Now it can be only marked only by prayer flags and offerings those pilgrims left.

Though mostly ruined, the gateway to Lhamo La-tso is dramatic. Chokorgye Monastery is wedged between three mountains: Zhidag Palden Lhamo and Begtse in the Tsi-chu Valley. It was founded in 1509 by the second Dalai Lama, Gendun Gyatso. Later, the monastery served as a staging post for visits to the lake for the Lama and regents. As many as 500 monks used to live here. Now the number declines. There is a mani wall on nearby slope. It consecrates a footprint stone of the second Dalai Lama.

A ritual shokde was once built for the Dalai Lamas on the mountain pass that overlooks Lhamo La-tso. Unfortunately, today it has been buried under a mound of kathak. Walk for 15min from the shokde to the pass, and then go down the mountain for another 1.5 h, you can reach the place, which is surrounded by kora nowadays.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
