The seat of the State Oracle of Tibet is also called Nechung Chok or &quot;the small dwelling&quot;.</p> <p>The monastery is of great importance as it serves as the residence of both the chief protector of the Gelugs and the State Oracle(though now he lives in Dharamsala). Legends say that the Gelugs is three-headed and six-armed. Besides, there are100 monks live here.</p> <p>On the second floor there is a huge new statue of Guru Rinpoche, or Padmasambhava. There is also a college of debate for young sudents to the east of Nechung.</p> <p>Protector Pehar, the deity of the Horpas, also takes his residence in Samye Monastery. He is regareded as one of the treasures of Samye Monastery. It is said that Padmasambhava took him here to protect the dharma. Yet some also believe that a Bon general, Tara Lugong, also a deity of the Horpas, brought it back. Tara Lugong opened a meditation school near Kanchow of the Bha&#355;a Hor.&nbsp; A tribe of Uighur lived in this region at the end od the 8th century.</p> <p>During the reign of the fifth Dalai Lama, Pehar moved to Tse Gugtang from Samye. Since then, it has lived in the east, right near the site of Nechung Monastery.</p> <p>State Oracle is very important. He is one of the most important advisors of Dalai Lama. As a Nyingma monk, he was adopted by the Gelugpas. Then people chose him for his capacity to recept possession. Thus he was chosen during the trance, and then he is considered the medium of Dorje Drakden, one of Pehar's aspects.</p> <p>The supernatural powers of the State Oracle are to lift heavy weights, twist swords and tongue lolling and bloodshot eyes. When he held Pehar, monks would record and interpret his words. It is said that he could let grains falling to the crowd like the rainfall.</p> <p>People in the Central Asian believe that shamans could let their spirits fly when they are in a trance-like state. Then they can bring back messages from the spirits. A tradition here is to inherit the acts from the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet, Bon. In Tibet, the oracles act &quot;as a mouthpiece for the gods or spirits who possess him and speak through him, very often without his own knowledge of what is being said, answering directly the questions of those who consult him.&quot; Even the Fifth Dalai Lama is regarded as &quot;the first to institutionalise the State Oracle of Nachung.&quot;</p> <p align="left"><span class="STYLE5"><em>The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
