It is about 4,441 meters (about 14,570 feet) above the sea level with an average depth of some 20-40 meters (about 11-22 fathoms).</p> <p>The Yamdrok Yumtso Lake has other beautiful and vivid names like Coral Lake or Green Jade Lake. The former name is because of its irregular shape - with many short streams winding into the nearby mountains thus looks like the coral. The latter one refers to the beautiful appearance for the pure clean water of the lake is just like the surface of a fine jade. The smooth water surface looks like a bright mirror in the sun. The reflection of sunshine in different depths gives the lake gorgeous and mysterious colors. Seen from above, the lake, like a holy sapphire, is dotted in a group of mountains. In the lake scattered several small islands on which fertile grasses and wild birds betray peaceful but vigorous natural scenery. Surrounded by the uninterrupted snow-capped mountains, the Yamdrok Yumtso Lake appears very holy and evokes solemnity under the clear blue sky.</p> <p>It is said that the Yamdrok Yumtso lake - one of the three holy lakes - is the female Guardian of Buddhism in Tibet. The local people believe that it will bless and protect them. Every year, many devoted followers , no matter from Tibet or other places, would come here for pilgrimage. Many of them start on foot and give one prostration every three steps even from hundreds of kilometers away.
