It is also called the Yao Wang Shan, meaning the Hill of Medicine King. Like many mountains in Tibet, it is high above sea level: 3,725 meters. There is a path leading to the top. One have a fantastic view of the city and its surroundings.

One can also take wonderful photos of the Potala Palace from the Chakpori Hill. The place attracts thousands of photographers to take a photo here. The best time is the early morning, as one can take a picture of the palace in the first rays of the sun.

The road between the hill and the palace is so narrow that it just cuts through the small mountain. A giant white pagoda sits in the middle of the road. Besides, an iron chain links the two hills of the two sites together.

People say that Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty used to pray on the hill, facing the southeast, where her home was. Zhalaupu Grottoes, the famous tourist site, is located on the eastern cliff of the hill. It is amazing that after more than a thousand of years it is still well preserved. The unequal-rectangle-shaped grotto is 27 square meters. Other 69 lifelike stone-made statues are engraved on the rock. All those represent the craftsmanship of Tibetan stone inscription art.

There is a large cluster of rock carvings on the south cliff. Totally 5,000 cliff-side carvings can be found here. The carvings here are largest in number and most diversified in contents and style in this region. Most of the carvings are about the images of Buddhas, including Sakyamuni, Bodhisattva, Guardian of the Laws, and the Eleven-Faced Goddess of Mercy. There are also six-word Buddhist maxims on the four sides of the images.

Many families live here doing the work of engraving and decorating mani stones. These are stones showing people's religious piety. A traditional custom is that at the Sakadawa festival every year, pilgrims will come here and put mani stones by the hill. Now there have already formed piles of mani.

It is said that there used to be a temple on the top of the mountain, with a sapphire figure depicting a certain Tibetan Medicine King inside. Legend goes that the King was the incarnation of Sakyamuni. Thus he had the power of treating all diseases. The fifth Dalai Lama called lamas from all the region to this temple. They were the first group to study traditional Tibetan medicine systematically. Later, Desi Sangye Gyatso established the Tibetan Medical School on this hill in the late 17th century. The school contributed a lot to the development of Tibetan medicine.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
