Here you can not only see common hot springs but fountains, but also various geysers, boiling springs, and hot-water lakes, which are rare even in the world. At present, series of thermoelectricity plant, green houses, and hot spring baths, attract tourists both from domestic and abroad.

Established in 1977, The power plant is the first and largest thermal in China and provides a large proportion of the electricity demand in Lhasa. Terrestrial heat here provides energy for two new geothermal electricity generating stations as well as warmth and humidity for a huge geodesic greenhouse which produce unseasonal vegetables. Unperturbed by the racket of gushing steam and modern technology, the nomads are in the vicinity and yaks are grazng right up to the wire fence. The town lies on the left of the road is dotted with houses and private facilities for workers at the power plant. A roadside village stands by provides services for truck drivers who stop at this junction on their way north to Shigatse.

Established in 1976, The power plant is the first and largest thermal in China and meets a large proportion of the electricity demand in Lhasa. As other fuels, except yak dung and wood, have to be trucked in, the electricity produced is vital to Tibet's economic development. If you want to visit the plant, an arrangement should be given by CITS with a technician to answers questions and give guidance tour of the steam-powered generators, cooling towers and steam-heated greenhouses where vegetables grow throughout the year.

The road stretches northeast from Yangpachen through a long, straight, upland valley is usually dotted with nomad canvas and herds of yaks. The nomads who roam over vast areas of northern Tibet accounts for abut a quarter of the population. They produce the wool which has been Tibet's chief export for centuries and provide the this area with meat and dairy products. It is hard to known the exact number of them, for nomads , especially in eastern Tibet, always live a half-settled life. One tribe with the same name and same chief may be scattered in two entirely different occupations, sharing and exchanging roles as farmers and shepherds. Some nomads will return to their winter home for a few months a year while others barely know what it is in their entire life.
Nomads are, though big, tough people, they are handsome, cheerful and independent. At sacred places throughout Tibet they stand out in their sheepskin chubas (long coats) as the most ardent and joyous of pilgrims. They value honesty a lot and can practice rough justice. It is said that nomads always return both kindness and bad turn twofold.

Nomads families live in black tents made of yak-hair or woven wool that can be easily moved. No matter how different the tents looks in shape, it invariably contain a fire-pit for cooking and an altar. Women and children usually work around their camp, while men cover long distances alone on horseback. A typical family commands an impressive array of skills and can live for long periods without touching settled areas, their only outside essentials being tea and tsampa.

The animals-yaks, sheep and goats, often with a number of hundreds, are the family's private property. with the assistance of the dogs, Men, women even children control the herd's by using a sling and pebble with incredible accuracy. The woolen sling cracks like a whip as a pebble files from its leather pouch, and a moment later a straying yak gallops at full speed back to its herd.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
