It neighbors Qamdo in the east, Ngari in the west, Lhasa, Nyingtri and Shigatse in the south, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province in the north. It is embraced by the Tanggula, Nyainqentanglha and Kangdese Mountains. And the snow-capped Dargo Mountain in the west and the Burgyi Mountain in the east guard the treasure land like two lions.</p> <p>Nagchu Prefecture had a population of 330,286 and exercises jurisdiction over 10 counties and the Shuanghu Special Administrative Zone.</p> <p>Covering an area of some 400,000 square kilometers, Nagchu Prefecture is generally called as Changtang. It is at an average elevation of over 4,500 meters. There are high mountains surrounding the river valleys in the east, which is the farming region of northern Tibet. The prefecture also has forest resources and bush pasture. It has an annual average temperature of -0.9&deg;C to -3.3&deg;C, an annual relative humidity of 48-51 percent, an annual precipitation of 380mm, and the sunshines of 2,852.6-2,881.7 hours each year. From November to March, the air is dry, the temperature is low and the area is exposed to violent sandstorm. From May to September, Nagchu is warm and enjoys good weather. The growing season lasts for 100 days every year.</p> <p>Nagchu Administrative office is located in Nagchu Town, which is on the edge of the Changtang. It is also one of the highest, coldest and most windswept towns in Tibet. Thus altitude also brings a surprisingly low oxygen level: only 60% of those at sea level. It is normal for visitors to feel headaches here, so visitors must watch out for altitude sickness. Prepare an oxygen can and warm clothes as well, for the climate here is often dismal even when it's summer outside.</p> <p>Nagchu town serves as an important stop on both the road and railway line between Qinghai and Tibet. From 10 to 16 August, Nagchu will hold a horse-racing festival. During this period, as many as 10,000 nomads from all over Changtang will build a tent city here. Moreover, it may be hard to find an accommodation.</p> <p>A large Shabten Monastery is located on the western outskirts of the town. This monastery belongs to Lhasa's Sera Monastery. Totally 130 monks live here. Across the canal is the small Tsenkhang chapel. Walk northwest for about 30 mins in the Qinghai-Tibet Hwy and you will get to the Samtenling Nunnery. Sometimes, there are northern nomad in the bazzars.
