It covers an area of 1,870 square kilometres, which enable it to be the largest in the Tibet Autonomous Region of this kind. People sometimes may misunderstand that it is the highest lake in Tibet, or it is the largest salt lake in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The fact is neither of these titles belong to Namtso Lake. For the former, it is Sengli lake, in western Tibet [Lat: 30.42, Long: 84.05], which has an altitude of 5,386 m. For the latter, it is Qinghai Lake (almost twice the size of Namtso); which lies over 1,000 km [650 miles] to the north-east in China's Qinghai province.&nbsp;</p> <p><img height="314" alt="The Entry to Namtso Lake" width="479" src="/images/Namtso-lake/Namtso Lake3.jpg" /></p> <p>In addition to one or two rocky outcrops, there are five uninhabited islands of reasonable size. In the past, the place is for some pilgrims' spiritual retreat. At&nbsp; the end of winter, they would carry their food and walk to the other side of the lake through the frozen surface and stay there for the summer until the next year when the lake freeze again. This practice has been banned nowadays.</p> <p>Among the five islands, the largest one lies in the north-west corner of the lake. With a length of 2,100m and a width of 800m, the island rises about 100m above the water. The closest point is only about 3.1km away from the shore.</p> <p><img height="320" alt="Namtso Lake" width="477" src="/images/Namtso-lake/Namtso Lake2.jpg" /></p> <p>The most remote island is 5.1km away from the shore, measured from the closest point.</p> <p>Weather here is hard to predict due to its abrupt and sudden changes,generally speaking, snowstorms are very common across the Nyainq&ecirc;ntanglha range.</p> <p>Namtso is famous for its spectacular natural beauty in the Nyainq&ecirc;ntanglha mountain range. For centuries, its cave hermitage has been the destination of Tibetan pilgrims. In 2005, a road across Largen La was build to connect Lhasa and the lake, therefore, tourism in this region was greatly developed.</p> <p>In terms of the ethnic group, Dobjoi, Donggar and Cha'gyungoinba people are main residents.</p> <p><img height="300" alt="Tashi" width="485" src="/images/Namtso-lake/Tashi.jpg" /></p> <p>The beautiful scenery also attracts a lot of directors to shoot films here. Some scenes in the 2002 Hong Kong film The Touch come from here. And also, it was also featured in the BBC TV series: Himalaya with Michael Palin.</p> <p>Within two hours walk, you can get Tsurphu kora, however, this walk can be quite exhausting if you are not accustomed to the high altitude.
