Mindroling means "Place of Perfect Emancipation" in Tibetan. It is located in Zhanang County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. The monsatery is on the south side of the Tsangpo river, about 43 kilometers east of the Lhasa airport.
Rigzin Terdak Lingpa, whose lineage is known as the Nyo lineage, founded the monstery in 1676.In 1718, the Dzungar Mongols from East Turkistan did some severe damage to Mindroling. Then, during the the reign of the Seventh Dalai Lama, it was rebuilt, under the supervision of Dungsay Rinchen-namgyel and Jetsunma Mingyur Paldron, the son and daughter of Terdak Lingpa.

Teachings
The monastery has trained its monastic university to Nyingma scholars and yogis from all over Tibet for nearly 300 years. The learning of Buddhist scriptures, astronomy, Tibetan lunar calendar, calligraphy, rhetoric, and Traditional Tibetan medicine are emphasized here. Monks are trained traditionally with thirteen years of major sutra and tantra texts of the Nyingma, and the practices stemming from various terma, especially from the lineage of Terdak Lingpa. At one time, the monastery had over 100 satellites. At that time, the throne holder of the monastery was one of the most revered all over the Tibet.

Structure and Relics
The central Tsuglhakhang is an elegant brown stone structure on the west side of the courtyard. If you walk clockwise, the first chapel is the Zhelre Lhakhang. Inside the chapel, there are statues of Guru Rinpoche and Terdak Lingpa. Another statue of is housed in the bare main hall, along with Dorje Chang and a row of Kadamstyle chortens, for the monastery originally belonged to the Kadampa school. The inner chapel housed a large Sakyamuni statue.
If you go upstairs, you will find the Tresor Lhakhang, which houses several treasures. The most remarkable ones including a stone hoofprint and a famed old thangka with the gold footprints and handprints of Terdak Lingpa. The host of it was originally the fifth Dalai Lama.
The top floor holds the Lama Lhakhang, along with some fine ancient murals of the Nyingma lineages. There is also a central statue of Kuntu Zangpo, and an empty Dalai Lama’s quarters.
The other main building is the Sangok Potrang, which is to the right of the first one. It was used for Tantric practices. A famous ‘speaking’ mural of Guru Rinpoche is To the left of the main entrance. A huge thangka is Flanking the left wall. It is unfurled once a year on the 18th day of the fourth lunar month.
Recently, a new white chorten has been built to replace an original 13-storey chorten, which was destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. The Taiwanese offered the fund.

Reconstruction
In the year of the 1959, during the revolt against Chinese Communist rule in Central Tibet, 300 monks lived at Mindroling. In the following few years, the monastery suffered again form damage to its buildings. Fortunately, the damage was not as severe as at other monasteries. Now the monastery is still reconstruction.

Customs and Routes
On the 10th day of the fifth Tibetan lunar month and the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, Mindroling will organize the cham dancing. Also, the latter festival features the creation of a sand mandala nine days later.
One can climb past the ground-floor statue of Jampa to its upper floors. The ruins of what used to be a nunnery can be reached through some walks lead off from the kora around the Tsuglhakhang, west up the valley through the village. Besides, there is a small Tsongdu Tsokpa Monastery on the main road,1.5km towards Tsetang. The original monastery across the road has been converted into a housing block.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
