Gyirong Gorge

It is an admirable place for appreciating the nature, about 25 kilometers away from the Gyamda county town. Dorqu River which flows from the Gyamda county town surges east and empties into Jinsha River. Alongside the two banks of the river, majestic peaks stand face to face. The cliffs are thousands of zhang deep, while the valleys are about five kilometers long.

There are dazzlingly beautiful Tibetan Buddhist sutras carved on both precipices of the gorge. The lettering is bold, vigorous and still distinct after hundreds of years. There is a cave by the half way up the mountain, which was said to be the cave where King Gesar subdued the demon. According to the legend, there once was a female demon named Sajormo living in Xitong Cave. She did harm to life and gave countenance to the evil elements in their activities. King Gesar intended to subdue the demon. However, after several rounds of fierce fighting, Sajormo escaped to a cave in the depths of Gyirong Gorge. King Gesar eventually captured her again and trapped her in the cave with her body bounded from the back. At present there is an image of bounded person in front of the cave, as vivid as life. What’s more, in the middle of the Dorqu River, there is a huge stone dice said to be used by King Gesar and his wife Qomo when they played chess. It was said that the stone had sagacity. For example, a sterile woman stands by the riverside and throws cobbles to the magic stone. If the cobbles stay on the huge stone and does not roll into the river, the woman could become pregnant in future.

Roaming about in the gorge and looking up at the sky, the clods and the sky fill the narrow gap; majestic peaks stand towering, which win people’s great admiration. Whenever the cold winds blow over there, the waters and rocks would strike each other and make continuous tremendous sound. The clouds cap the mountain, and you may feel as if staying in a fairyland, carefree and happy. The path wins along the mountain ridges, and suddenly varied scenry would appear in front of you. Wild apricots and peaches rush into the range of vision. There are dense bushes, fragrance of flowers and birds'twitter. The scenery is as beautiful as a painting and the beauty of the nature open out before people as much as possible.
