It contains a series of graveyard tumuli. The distance between the valley and south of Tsetang is about 27 kilometres. Tsetang is near the town of Qonggyai on Mure Mountain in Qonggyai County of the Shannan Prefecture.

The Mounds
There are totally 8 large mounds of earth in the valley. Each of the mound resembles natural hills. People believe that the mounds are the tombs of eight to ten buried Tibetan kings.

"According to Tibetan tradition all the kings from Dri-gum onwards are buried at ‘Phyong-rgyas, but as the site now presents itself, there are just ten tumuli identifiable as the tombs of all the kings from Srong-brtsan-sgam-po to Khri-lde-srong-brtsan, including two princes . . . ."

But there are also other materials saying the number of the mounds is 9, not 8 nor 10. The kings who are said to be buried here include Songtsän Gampo, who is the founder of the Tibetan Empire, Nansong Mangsten, Dusong Mangban, Gyangtsa Laban, Tride Tsugtsen, Trisong Detsen, Muni Tsangpo and Tritsu Detsen.

At the front of the Valley stand two stone lion steles. One of them has been destroyed, but fortunately, the other is in good condition, except for a broken leg. With a height of 1.55 m and a length of 1.3m, the lion stands on a 0.76 meter pedestal.

Another mound is dedicated to Tride Songtsen, who was the ruler of Tibet from 798 to 815. There are two steles in the mound. The first stele is 7.18 m high, with an inscription of vivid carvings of floating clouds and flying celestials. The second stele is similar to the first, with only some different carvings. All those ancient Tibetan script shows that Tride Songtsen was a great ruler during his time.

The Temple in the Largest Mound
The mound near the north bank of Qonggyai, or Chonggye River is the largest among all the mounds. It has a reconstructed temple dedicated to Songtsän Gampo, which can be dated back as early as13th century. In 1983, people rebuilt the temple with restored murals. After the reconstruction, 3 monks are responsible for the maintaining of the temple.

In the centre of the temple houses Gampo's altar statue, which is surrounded by statues of his Chinese wife, Wen Cheng, and his Nepalese wife, Tritsun, with a crystal ball in hand. At the side are eminent ministers, for example, Sambhota, a noted Tibetan philologist, also the founder of Tibetan writing. A crowned Maitreya with two Sakyamunis stand behind. There is also a mural on the right wall, depicting Indian deities of the 8th century.

Myth of Gampo's Tomb
Many scholars believe that this is the actual place where Gampo was buried; while others argue the emperor was laid in Jokhang, Lhasa. But since the mound had never formally excavated, the truth remains unknown. However, according to the ancient Tibetan Annals and Tibetan tradition, he should be buried in a silver coffin, in a place deep beneath the ground. His tomb should be like a central, subterranean chamber, with nine smaller chambers filled with treasures.

Furthermore, according to funeral rites listed in the annals, there should be a suit of armour, which was worn by himself on expedition, on the left side; while on the right, knights and battle horses made of solid gold, which served as sacrifice to the king.

Other sources also indicate that the inner part of the tomb have altogether five halls, and a central tomb chamber about 100 square meters in area, with a height of 13.4 m. The statues of himself and those of Sakyamuni and Avalokitesvara are believed to surround Gampo's silver coffin. There is said to be a coral statue of Lord Loyak Gyalo buried at the head of the coffin. The Lord will give light to the dead king. At the foot of the coffin, there is a cache of 35-kilogram pears. The pears are said to be wrapped in silk, which symbolizes Gampo’s abundance in wealth. People also believe that in the tomb there is a large amount of gold and silver utensils, as well as reliquary and commemorative artifacts.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
