On the remote and vast northern plateau, travellers can get a peep at the herds of the cattles and sheep as well as the settlements of the seminomadic residents who make their homes in the Changtang.</p> <p>The tents of the nomads' are usually made of spider-like brown or black yak-hair. Generally, the whole family share one tents unless the son marries and has his own children, in which case a relatively small tent can be added. The tents usually holds all the properties of a family and inside, all the facilities for daily life are stored. There will be a stove for cooking and boiling water, an altar for Buddhist deities and various local protectors for the livestock, tent pole and hearth etc.. The main course of the nomads' are yak butter and dried yak cheese, tsampa and sometimes yak meat.</p> <p>The herds of cattles and sheep are usually took care by men in the day time, for most of the time, accompanied by the ferocious Tibetan mastiffs. Meanwhile, women and children will stay at home to guard their tents, during which period they often weave blankets and tan sheepskins to support the family as well as kill time.</p> <p>The beginning of the winter is a good time to the markets of the urban center. At the market, the farmers will provide the nomads with tsampa while the nomads will offer meat and butter in exchange. Most nomads nowadays have a relatively settled home at winter, and they only migrate to other distant pastures in the other seasons.</p> <p>Compared to the marriage customs of the farmers', the nomads' marriage customs are very different. When a child is old enough, a matchmaker will make an requirement. If a suitable match is found, the couple will exchange&nbsp; gift. After their meet for the first time, if they like each other, they can continue this informal meeting. But how long the meeting should last is decided by the astrologer. And when the day comes for their marriage, the son will ride to the camp to pick his potential fiancee. But instead of picking the girl directly, there is the custom of mutual abuse which appears to be so fierce that it can become violence at any moment. This may continue for several days before the son could finally take the girl back to his home and the girl ends with the role of a new wife.</p> <p>The nomads also maintain a tradition of trading salt collected from the the Changtang. Usually, it is transported to the south border for trading of grain with the Nepal. The annual caravans are dying out soon. The traditional lifestyle of the nomads has been severely damaged during the Cultural Revolution when nomads were collectivized and forced to settle down by the government. In 1981, the collectivized livestock were divided equally and everyone got 5 yaks, 25 sheep and 7 goats.</p> <p>The population of Drokopas are now around two million, half of that of pre-1950. The incentive policies from the government is further reducing the population and the pasture of the nomads'. Motorbike, as well as enforced migration dates and winter housing have largely changed the form of their life. Young people also change their attitude about the grasslands and turn to seek for a better life in the urban area.
