It was once a self-contained world. The largest of these monasteries, the Drepung contained around 10,000 monks at the time of 1951. Like the other major Gelugpa institutions, Drepung was more like an assembly of colleges rather than a single unit. Each of the colleges has its own interests, resources and administration.</p> <p>The college is also known as dratsang. They were in turn made up of residences of kangtsang. A monk from one college was assigned to a kangtang according to the region he was born in. For example, it is believed that 60% of monks at Drepung&rsquo;s Loseling College were from Kham, while Gomang College was dominated by monks from Amdo and Mongolia. This attached the monastic colleges with a distinctive regional label. At the same time, it also meant that loyalties were more attributed to the colleges than the monastery itself.</p> <p>The abbot or khenpo is the head of a college. It is a position that was filled by contenders with the highest degrees of monastic studies. The Dalai Lama will choose the successful applicant himself. There was a group of religious leaders who supervised prayer meetings and festivals beneath the abbot. Besides them, there was a group of economic managers who controlled the various kangtsang estates and funds. There was also a squad of huge monk known as dob-dobs, who were in charge of discipline and administering punishments. Each group has their special duties.</p> <p>There were often a lot of estates and funds in the larger colleges. For example, over 180 estates and 20,000 serfs were in the Loseling College to farm the land and pay taxes to the monastery. Trade was common for monastery. In most of the cases, these holdings were not used to support monks. Instead, it was used to maintain the never-ending prayer meetings and festivals that were deemed necessary for the spiritual good of the nation.
