Ganden Potrang, Coqen Hall, the four Zhacangs (or Tantric colleges), and Kamcuns are among the major buildings.

The bird view of Drepung Monastery

GANDEN PALACE
Situated in the southwest corner of the monastery, the Ganden Potrang was built around 1530, under the supervision of the second Dalai Lama Gendun Gyaco. After its completion, it became the residence of the second, third, fourth, and the fifth Dalai Lamas. Though the fifth Dalai Lama moved to the Potala Palace later, the Palace still remained as the meeting place for the local regime for both politics and religion.

The Ganden Palace of Drepung

THE TSOGCHEN HALL
In the center of the monastery, there is the Tsogchen Hall, with a square as large as about 1,850 square meters in front of it. After you step on the wide stone stairs, the grand Entrance Hall is just in the front. It is magnificent inside the Hall. There is the Sutra Hall which is supported by 183 pillars, with an area of 1,850 square meters. All the colorful decorations are beautiful, too. Exquisite and vivid statues of Buddha are found here. The collections of precious sutras can be found in the second story. Also, you can see a set of Gangyur Tripitaka written in gold powder, as well as woodcarving sutras of the Qing Dynasty. Moreover, the enshrinement of a huge bronze statues of Qamba Buddha on the third story is enshrined. People believe that this is the future appearance of the Qamba Buddha in his 8th year. The disciples of Buddhism worship him very much.

There are totally 4 Zhacangs in the monastery. A Zhacang serves usually as the sutra-learning places and the subordinate organization. Loseling Zhacang is the largest because it attracts the most lamas. The focus of these Zhacangs are different. The Loseling, Gomang, and Deyang Zhacang focus on the Esoteric Buddhism, while for the Ngaba Zhacang is the Exotoric Buddhism.

Debate is a very important part for the study of the monks. On the grounds of the monastery, several courtyards are used specially for debate on the sutras. People choose those courtyards sites near Zhacang and grow various trees there. The winner of the debate in both Zhacang and the entire monastery is qualified to attend the test for the senior degree of Geshi for their further study.

COLLEGES
There are many different colleges in the Drepung. Below is some brief introduction about them.

NGAGPA COLLEGE
Ngagpa belongs to one of Drepung's four colleges. The believers of Ngagpa devote themselves to Tantric study. The chapel is dedicated to Dorje Jigje. He is a Tantric meditational deity who is opposed to the forces of impermanence. It is said that the cartoon-style Dorje Jigje image has been fashioned by Tsongkhapa himself. Seeing in the clockwise direction, you can find other statues include Palden Lhamo, Nagpo Chenpo, Drolma,Tsongkhama, the fifth Dalai Lama, the Nechung oracle and, Dorje Drakden by the door. The statue of Chogyel is to the right direction, with his hand thrusting out of the glass cabinet.

If you are interested in what Drepung was like before the renovation teams arrived, you may detour briefly up to the Samlo Kangtsang, which is unrestored and surrounded by melancholic ruins.

Therer is the pilgrim path around the back of the assembly hall. Following the path, you will pass the small Jampelyang Temple. It is the place where pilgrims pour yak butter on the wall and then peer in to see a holy rock painting and get hit on the back with a holy iron rod. Moving forward a little further, you will see the tiny meditation cave of Jamyang Choje, which is tucked in on the right, with some fine rock paintings.

Debate is the main course of Colleges

LOSELING COLLEGE

Loseling college is the largest among all the Drepung's colleges. Their studies focus on logic. In the main hall there are a throne used by the Dalai Lamas, an extensive library, and a long altar decorated with statues of the fifth, seventh and eighth Dalai Lamas, Tsongkhapa and former Drepung abbots. People also used offerings to cover the chorten of Loseling’s first abbot. There are three chapels in the back of the hall. In the left there are 16 arhats, using for pilgrims walk under in a circuit. In the central chapel are large image of Jampa and interesting photos and a self-arisen image of the Nechung oracle; a small but beautiful statue of Sakyamuni is in the right od the chapel.

When you get the 2nd floor, you will find yourself in a small chapel, which is full of angry deities. Passing under the body of a stuffed goat draped with one-mao, you may note that before entering the spooky gonkhang. Some more protective deities house there, among them are Nagpo Chenpo,Dorje Drakden and Dorje Lekapa.

After visiting the chapel, you may as well go to the small debating couryard which is in the west of Loseling College. Sometimes, monks would do their music practise in the garden, with the blowing of huge horns and the crashing of cymbals.

GOMANG COLLEGE

Being the second largest of Drepung's colleges, the Gomang College follows the same layout as Loseling. There is a whole row of images of Jampa, Tsepame and the seventh Dalai Lama. Also, three chapels are in the back with the same arrangement: three deities of longevity are in the left house, and the central chapel houses a more important chock-a-block with images. Moreover, a single protector chapel is on the upper floor. Following the old tradition, it is rather pitiful that women are not allowed into this chapel.

DAYANG COLLEGE AND OTHER COLLEGES

Deyang College is the smallest of Drepung's colleges. If you have visited the other major colleges and have limited time for your tour, you may give up this one as there is no distinct difference between this one and others. The principal image in the main hall is Jampa, with other figures like Jampelyang, Drolma, the fifth Dalai Lama and others.

If you go to the East of the chapel, you will find a clster of friendly colleges. But those are that the tour grouips never reach, including the Lamba Mitze, Lumbum Kangtsang, Jurche Mitze, though it was once the home of Inner Mongolia students. You may later go round to the Khamdung Kangtsang, and in the upstairs of it you can find the place is defaced with faded Mao slogans and images. If you notice those slogans, you may surprisingly find that there are many of them written in English saying welcome the tourists afar.

In the afternoon, between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, there is monk-debating in the main debating courtyard, which is at the northeast corner of the monastery. You may better plan your time and watch their debate.

page:[1]page

[ Printing] [Closure]

More Information Related to Drepung Monastary

<xoYu_CMS_CODE:NEWS:NEWS_TOP>Drepung Monastery - PHOTO GALLERY
What to see in Drepung Monastery
The Protection of Cultural Relics at Drepung Monastery
Cultural Background of Drepung Monastery
Famous Buddha Show in Drepung Monastery
Drepung kora
Drepung Monastery
</xoYu_CMS_CODE:NEWS:NEWS_TOP>

  <fieldset> <legend>Want a Quick Answer?</legend>
Name:

Email: <input type="text" id="email" name="Email"tabindex="2">

Your Request    <textarea name="content" id="text1" rows="3" onBlur="if (value ==''){value='Question not answered?
