She was supposed to marry Songtsan Gambo, King of Tubo, and their marriage was meant to strengthen the tie between the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo Kingdom. The legendary of this interracial matrimony and its significance has been passing from one generation to another by Chinese people ever since.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> Historically, by various of policies and under the leadership of several emperors, the Tang Dynasty successfully reunited the country, and became powerful and prosperous. The influence was permeated to a large area, including East and Central Asia. The prosperous of the dynasty can also be perceived in the frequent and active Commercial and cultural exchanges between Tang and its neighbours.<br /> In 629, a coup d'etat took place in Tubo. The 31st king was assassinated by his political opponent who bent on returning to the old system. Thus, the thirteen year old Songtsan Gambo became the 32nd Zanpu. Though young, he was already a resourceful statesman who can calmly exploit his diplomatic and military clout. He, only in three years, crushed conspiracy and made Tubo became an integrated kingdom again, with a capital newly established at today' Lhasa. With all these achievements, Songtsan Gambo was crowned as a national hero of the Tibetans and&nbsp; was worshipped like the revered Lamas.<br /> <br /> After this reunification, Songtsan Gambo bent on building Tubo into a powerful kingdom. In order to fulfill this goal, he employed many strategies, including establishing matrimonial relationships between his royal family and those of his neighboring countries to inject new cultural elements into Tubo. Out of admiration for Emperor Taizong's great talent and bold vision, he proposed to marry one of the emperor's daughter. Since this marriage would enable Tubo to be a tributary of Tang, it is greatly welcomed by the government and the emperor. <br /> <br /> The the legend of Princess Wencheng and her matrimonial journey has many versions, for every generation could have add their own episodes to the former version. Therefore, now it is hard to tell fiction from historical reality. However, historic relics can still be found to prove the wedding trip. Statues of this couple are still worshiped in the Potala Palace at Lhasa today.<br /> <br /> &nbsp;It is said that Songtsan Bambo built the Ramoche Monastery especially for the Buddha statues that Princess Wencheng had brought with her. The princess herself also built Jokhang Monastery, in front of which the couple planted some willow trees now known as tangliu. The original statue of Sakyamuni which was believed brouht by the princess, is still placed in the center of the Jokhang Monastery hall.&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /> <br /> One year after the death of Emperor Taizong of Tang in 649, Songtsan Gambo's also died at the age of thirty-four. Thirty years later, princess Wencheng passed away. This beloved princess was remembered by a big ceremonious funeral and numerous verses by poets from different period. Her story is constantlyuesd as material for theatrical creations. The day when Princess Wencheng arrived in Tubo, i.e., the fifteenth day of the fourth month of each Tibetan year ) and her birthday, i.e., the fifteenth day of the tenth month of each Tibetan year have been adapted as traditional observations. During the two days, people will dress in their best costumes, dancing and singing to memorize her. Her and her husband's statues in the Jokhang Monastery attract people from far away to worship them.
