The 10th Dalai Lama - Lungtok Gyatso

Tsultrim Gyatso (29 March 1816 – 1837) was the 10th Dalai Lama of Tibet.
Recognized as the reincarnation of Lungtok Gyatso, the 9th Dalai Lama, Tsultrim Gyatso was actually born in a modest family which did not even have an heir to their land at that time. But in 1822,he was enthroned at the Potala palace as the 10th Dalai Lama.
This new Dalai Lama was chosen eight years after Lungtok Gyatso, the ninth Dalai Lama died in 1815.During that period, the politics were murky. But with the intervention of Palden Tenpai Nyima, the Golden Urn (from which names of candidates were picked), for the first time was used as part of the tests to choose the new Dalai Lama.
Soon after the enthronement as the 10th Dalai Lama in 1822, he received his pre-novice ordination from Palden Tenpai Nyima, the person who gave him name as Tsultrim Gyatso. In 1831, he administered the Gelong vows (full ordination) to Tsultrin Gyatso.
He was enrolled in 1826 at Drepung Monastery and mastered both sutra and tantra. In the rest of his life, he studied Tibetan Buddhist texts extensively.
In the year 1831, he took the  Gelong vows (full ordination) from the Panchen Lama and restored the Potala Palace.
He meant to overhaul the economic structure of Tibet, his short life span didn't allow him to see the fruits of his plans. He died in 1837 due to his poor health condition.
It is interesting to notice that all the 4 Dalai Lamas, from the ninth to the twelfth, had a very short life span. During that time, Panchen was the lama who can fill the void left by those lamas died in their youth.
