The focus of the renovation is to maintain the ancient building, the murals, its environment, improve and upgrade public facilities like fire prevention, drainage system, and lightning protection. The renovation has a cost as much as 200 million yuan.&nbsp;</p> <p>The project involves 55 sub-projects. Totally 1,722.68 sq m of the murals have been repaired.The renovation of the stone-wood structure combines the traditional maintenance skills with the modern technology. The renovation of the sleeper walls, also the key part of the whole project, involves altogether 491 such walls which are used to support floor joists of a ground floor.<br /> The Potala Palace was first built in 641 by Songtsan Gambo for Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty. In the 17th century the Fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the Palace after it had been burned down in war. The constructions continued to 1645 and finally brought the palace to its present scale. The first-phase renovation of the Potala Palace took place from 1989 to 1994, with a cost of more than 50 million yuan to help it regain its past splendor and magnificence.
