The Wetland Protection Law passes in Tibet
Three main ecosystems on the earth are wetland, forest and ocean. Early in 1992, China joined the Convention on International Wetland to protect wetland resources. The "Ordinance on the Protection of Wetlands in Tibet" has been passed in the 19th Plenary Session of the 9th Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Tibet Autonomous Region, which is the regional legislative body.
Nature reserves are required to be built around breeding spots, habitat or stopover for waterfowls under state or regional protection, living areas for rare and endangered wildlife, and wetlands of particular ecological value or important scientific research value according to regulations.
Anybody who drains water from wetlands, reclaims wetlands, releases poisonous and harmful substances, dumps solid wastes, gleans or destroys birds'eggs, will be punished. The law will come into force on March 1st, 2011.
