Norbulingka means “treasure park” in Tibetan dialect. The place is decorated with evergreen forests and all kinds of colorful blossom of flowers. It is a natural wonder of being built in a high attitude plateau city like Lhasa.

Only three kinds of people are allowed to enter the inner courtyard of Norbulingka before, which was circled by a compelling yellow wall. They are the senior lamas, the high officials of the government and members of the noble families.

Nowadays, there are more than 70 work staffs of the administration living in the “treasure park”, including more than twenty monks who take care of the palaces. At weekends, the local people would use those gardens as a wonderful picnic spot. And when festivals come, they will serve as a suitable shot for the ceremonies. And sometimes, they will also provide people with a great stage to enjoy the Tibetan opera performances.

The Norbulingka used to be on the side of the Lhasa River, but it has expanded since the government of Qing Dynasty (1636-1912 ), which first started to build it for the 3rd Dalai Lama and became a big garden palace with a total acreage of more than 46 hectares.

According to Ma Yigang, the head administrator in the Norbulingka that visitors, mainly pilgrims, now are allowed to visit almost all the buildings, even Takten Migyur Potrang, which means the Eternal Palace in Tibet.

Ma told us, "for the Tibetan, the Norbulingka is as holy a place as Potala Palace, so we have received a lot of devotees every year, especially since the Qinghai-Tibet railway opened to traffic three years ago."

Another official with the administration, Liu Rongquan, said that since 2006, the number of tourists to Norbulingka has kept increasing with an average of 18 percent every year. In 2007, the total number of tourists has reached 500,000 but in 2008, because of the riot in March, the number was less than 5,000, which was the lowest record in history.

Liu also said that no matter how many tourists come here, New Summer Palace or the Takten Migyur Potrang always ranks among the most popular places in Norbulingka.

Though New Summer Palace was built in 1956, by the Chinese central government, it is still very attractive for visitors. With its traditional Tibetan-styled appearance, painted pillars, upturned eaves and featured with carved beams, it still can be regarded as one of the most fashionable building in Tibet. And what's more, it is also famous for two stories, the story of the palace and the story inside of the palace.

The electric lamps and the butter lamps are both used to inside the rooms to make it brighter. There are ancient roll paintings of Buddha hanging at the same place of the same room where framed cat embroidery, which was a present from the British, was hung above the entering access. In the bedroom of the 14th Dalai Lama, there are traditional Tibetan cushions and a set of western-styled gray sofa. And the bed is made of a wooden with a spring-mattress on it.
For most of visitors, the bathroom is very strange. Enter the bathroom, visitors would see a white western bathtub, a toilet and a washing at the first sight. Liu said that everything in New Summer Palace is well kept just the same as what they were 50 years ago, like in all the other palaces.

The story of one visitor Karma Chozin is a newly graduated student from the Northwest University for Nationgalities in the neighboring Gansu Province, who is trying to search for a suitable job in Lhasa. She is totally surprised by the modern facilities in the palaces. "Even now, the toilet is rare to most Tibetans. I didn't expect he started to use it more than 50 years ago," said Chozin.

Though Chozin is only twenty two years old, she has been in Norbulingka twice. Her last memories of her childhood trip are about many trees and the excitement of having a look at the live peacock at a small zoo in the park for the first time.

Chozin told us that when she was very young, her father came to Lhasa to see her from her hometown in the Shannan Prefecture. In order to make her happy, her father decided to take her to the Norbulingka.

Those who are satisfied with the protecting jobs are not only the visitors, but also the administrators. Ma told us that there are more than 60,000 pieces of cultural remnants and all buildings have being so well protected from the man-made damages. He said that they have given equal attention to the protect of all the palaces in Norbulingka, without any exception, even to New Summer Palace.

There is a seven-year preservation project on the Norbulingka being expected to be finished in September this year. The project decided to spend more than 80,000,000 yuan (11.69 mollion U.S. dollars) in the protection of those relics. All the wooden buildings have been replaced with advance antisepsis materials and the mildew-eroded murals have been well repaired.

The Watchman of New Summer Palace
Jigme Geleg is very proud of his job. He is one of the eight watchmen of New Summer Palace. He is only twenty eight years old. Though he is a watchman, he also volunteers to work as a guide for the tourists to share with them his own understanding of the Tibetan culture and history of the region, because he can speaks fluent Mandarin and English. He is very good at communicating with others.

Jigme said he thought that Norbulingka was the source of the Tibetan culture and he hoped more and more people would have the chance to see these treasures in order to have a better understanding Tibetan culture and history, even many years later.

The young man has been working in the park for about ten years since he graduated from high school. And he began to work in New Summer Palace six years ago. Everyday, his work starts from 9:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon. His works including sweeping the floor, cleaning the lamp holders, lighting up the butter lamps, and changing the "holy water" presented in front of Dalai Lama's thrones.

Everyday, there would be many pilgrims who come with their offerings to visit the Norbulingka. The palace keepers like Jigme, they need to deal with the butter and the white silk called “hada” brought here by the pilgrims. Jigme said those two kind of offerings were welcome, but the barley could be a really problem for them to do with because it was not good for the protection of the wooden buildings. He said they often had to forbid the visitors from scattering the barley around the palace, though it was a very common practice for the pilgrims to show their respect and honest to Buddha, but the barley attracted mice too.

Jigme said a south-facing sutra hall on the second floor of the New Summer Palace is the main area he needed to pay attention to. There are 301 murals there which tell stories about the Tibetan history----from its founding by the Holy Monk to the 10th Panchen Lama and also the 14th Dalai Lama's interviews with Chairman Mao in Beijing in 1954.

In the New Summer Palace, pilgrims are often seen bending over or putting their heads on the foot of sculptures or the walls with murals, with saying about the holy words “Om Mani Padme Hum.” Jigme said the paintings were more than an art because they helped to make up a brief story of Tibetan history.

The word files of this webpage and some images are original works of Tibettravel.Org.
