But the traditional art is now fighting to prove its relevance in a modern world. In our &quot;Eye on Lhasa&quot; series, Zou Yue talks to some performers of the art, both young and old, and finds some hope for the ancient tradition.</p> <p>In our last installment of the Eye on Lhasa Series, a Canadian who has been living in Lhasa for 4 years talks about his adventure on the highland and explains the reason why he is staying.</p> <p>The performers are old, the performances are even older.</p> <p>Tibetan opera boasts a history of 600 years. The performers are actually farmers, giving shows in their spare time. They just can't get enough of it.</p> <p>Farmer performer Dianda said: &quot;I am 68 and have been doing this for 38 years. I still have the spirit and confidence to play the art.&quot;</p> <p>Dianda has reason to be happy. Today is the Shonton Festival, and it's not every day people will come from all over Tibet or even around the world.</p> <p>Dutch tourist Erwin Laskewitz said: &quot;It is Tibetan culture. It is important for Tibetan people. It is good to know.&quot;</p> <p>But the ancient art is not appreciated by all, especially the young.</p> <p>15-year-old Ni Qiong says she doesn't like Tibetan opera. She's only here because of her grandparents. Ni Qiong says she prefers modern songs.</p> <p>And she's not alone. Many young Tibetans choose to go to Karaoke or discos for entertainment.</p> <p>What does this mean for the future of Tibetan opera?</p> <p>These 5th and 6th graders provide an answer of hope. 13-year-old Gesang Lunzhu has been trained in the art for 4 years. And he doesn't plan to stop.</p> <p>Gesang Lunzhu, student of Snow Primary School of Lhasa, said:&quot;I spend an hour a week on training in opera, sometimes half a day on weekends. I plan to do this when I grow up.&quot;</p> <p>This is no small ambition, considering the competition in the troupe. But his teacher Benba Puncog has been the inspiration for Lunzhu. The teacher choreographs the moves, leads the singing and most importantly, provides encouragement.</p> <p>Snow Primary School teacher Benba Puncog said: &quot;It's been 13 years since we began training students in opera. We are amateurs, but we have been received by people from all walks of life.&quot;</p> <p>He said all the members are on their own to join the team and to excel among others.</p> <p>Four graduates have joined professional teams and dozens more are studying at dance schools in Tibet and elsewhere. Their success stories have been firing up his team.</p> <p>With Tibetan opera ready to for listing as a UNESCO heritage, the troupe is looking at improved chances of not only survival, but development.</p> <p>The opera is a unique form that embodies Tibetan culture.
