In Konggar Monastery in Shannan Prefecture, the tradition of the ChenZher Painting School has been carried forward. Yeshi Tendzin (19l5-l 97l ), the abbot of Konggar Monastcry, had been trained in central Tibet for the skill of the Mentang Painting School during his childhood, but later he was greatly inspired by the frescos done by painters of ChenZher School, so he began to transfer the style into his own and has created many exquisite works. While Xigaze serves as the stronghold of Mentang Painting School in 20th century in Tibet. Among the all, Qoitalai and Xiloilai (around l9l9-l992), the two painters for Master Panchen Erdeni in Tashilhungpo Monastery, were the most active and fruitful artists in the school. The giant-sized silk thangka entitled "Amitabha" in the monastery is Xiloilai's representative masterpiece created in l950s. The tradition of the school originated in Shannan spread not only to Xigaze and Lhasa, but also gave influence Kham region. While the heritage of Garma Garze Painting School was fully developed in Kham region. Tonglha Zeweng (l902- l990), the famous painter in Dege was one of the significant figures of the school in 20th century. The wood block series entitled "Sixteen Arhats" published by Dege Sutra Printing House was created by him in l952; the most of the painting works for Dege Yung-chong Lhakang built in 1982 was done by him as well. all being the masterpieces of the school in the 20th century. Sakarzhur from Seling was a1so one of the representative masters of the school in the region. In l926, Sakarzhur supervised the rehabilitation works of Tongzuo Temple in Babang Monastery. On the top window of the roof, he pained goddess and eight living Buddhas of Garma Gegyu Sect with the elegant Garma Garze brush skill. Silang Nyima, another representative master of the school, showed amazing realistic style in his portraits of successive gurus of Gegyu sect created in Babang Monastery.

In this period, several regional artistic centers had taken shape in Tibet or Tibetan inhabitant area at large. Among the all, Lhasa in U region, Xigaze in TSang region, Qamdo and Dege in Kam region are most famous. Meanwhile, a number of accomplished artists had also been cultivated, such as Lhubun Geshi and Gendun Qoinpe from Amdo, Jomba and Yeshi Gyatso from Gyantse, Pubu Rintze and Chipa from Qamdo. Now the following famous painters are still active in Tibet artistic circle f Amdo Qamba, Tenpa Raden, Tashi Tseren, Rinzin Paljor, Chilai Qoinp, Doje Lai, Garchin Adunlai, Chunlo Tsilha and Losang Puncog, etc.

Different from their tradition-sticking ancestors, Tibetan artists in 20th and 2lst centuries more respect the concepts of absorbing of strings from other cultures. They not only keep the essence of the traditional painting schools, but a1so learn Chinese mainland painting skills and European painting techniques. Such integration makes Tibetan painting more charming. The good example is Thanglha Chiwang, who learned Mentang styles from great master Qoggyi Gyatso of Mentang painting school and from masters of ChenZher Painting School, and also some European painting techniques as well. With such special style, he painted series works entitled "Sixteen Arhats" and a portrait of guru Mila Riba with the traditional Chinese painting techniques, he also painted a portrait of Wanqu Gyalpo.

In addition, since l949 when the People's Republic of China was founded, the art graduates of different ethnic groups, such as Tibetan, Han and others, from artistic universities and colleges in different parts of China have been sent to Tibet, strengthening the forces of Tibetan paintings. The Artists Association of Tibet Autonomous Region was founded. Instead of directly learning the techniques of traditional painting schools as the old generations, the college students receive up-to-date education for Chinese painting, European oil painting, engraving, mural painting and sculpturing, the staying in Tibetan inhabitant area to learn the essence of the traditional Tibetan painting schools. The traditional art masters and the young artists from colleges learn from each other, brought a lot of brand new works to the light, featuring combination of ethnic and traditional style with essence of other arts from different parts of the world, thus revitalizing the time honored Tibetan pictorial art and making it prosperous in terms of both quality and quantity.

page:[1]page

[ Printing] [Closure]

More Information Related to Tibetan Arts & Handcrafts

<xoYu_CMS_CODE:NEWS:NEWS_TOP>Tibetan Pottery Wares
Tibetan Metal Wares
Block-Printing
Stones which are mysterious in Tibet
Butter Sculpture
Gesar stone carvings in Moska
Rock paintings in Tibet
Pottery Wares
Metal Wares
Masks
Block-Printing
Major Categories of the Paintings
Painting Techniques
Contemporary Paintings
The Evolvement of Tibetan Buddhist Sculptures
Clay Modelings
Stone Carvings
Butter Sculptures
</xoYu_CMS_CODE:NEWS:NEWS_TOP>

  <fieldset> <legend>Want a Quick Answer?</legend>
Name:

Email:  <input type="text" id="email" name="Email"tabindex="2">

Your Request    <textarea name="content" id="text1" rows="3" onBlur="if (value ==''){value='Question not answered?
