The annual Shoton Festival (also Yogurt Festival) in Tibet will fall on 17 August, 2012. The celebration of this grand festival usually lasts for a whole week. Shoton Festival 2012 will be held in Lhasa from August 17 to August 23, with a series of "happy Lhasa, cultural Shoton" themed activities, including Buddha Exhibition, Horse Racing, Tibetan opera performance, youth singing competition, flower show, car exhibition, Namtso international trekking race, etc. What is different this year is that a modern Tibetan musical forum will be held during this festival.

The following are the schedule of some activities of celebrating Shoton Festival 2012.
On August 17, Buddha Exhibition will be held at both
Drepung Monastery and
Sera Monastery, starting from 8:00am; then the opening ceremony of the Shoton Festival will be held at Potala Plaza in front of the famous
Potala Palace at night.
Moreover, exciting horse racing will also be held at Lhasa Horse Race Ground and a three-day Namtso international trekking race from Lhasa to the heavenly
lake Namtso will start from Lhasa in the morning. Participants of the trekking race will complete 60 km walking with 25-27 kilometers every day.
From August 17 to August 23, Tibetan opera performance will be given every day at
Norbulingka, the summer palace of dalai lamas. Besides, colorful flowers can be appreciated at Zongjiaolukang Park in the northern area of the Potala Palace in Lhasa when a flower show is held during the Shoton festival. In addition, Everest Photography Competition will be held on the Potala Plaza in Lhasa for a whole week from August 17. Hundreds of works recording the beautiful landscape and colorful life of Tibetan people will be exhibited on the Potala Square.
What's more, if you are interested in cars, a grand car exhibition named the Most Beautiful Heaven Road Trip will show you all kinds of cars provided by different automobile companies.
