Many travelers who plan to travel to Tibet would choose to travel to Nepal as well. There are flights to Kathmandu, Nepal from Lhasa, and you can also rent a car to drive from Lhasa to Kathmandu. Well, talking about driving, you may want to know the road condition from Lhasa to Kathmandu.
First of all, what you should keep in mind is that most of today’s Tibet is modern and Tibet is not the one you’ve known from the deceitful news media. And Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet is even better than some other cities of China Mainland.

A transport network centered around Lhasa has taken shape in Tibet. Road conditions in Tibet have also been improved significantly in recent years, especially the roads in the cities and between big cities. Most of the famous sightseeing places have asphalt roads, such as those in Lhasa area, Tsetang, Nyingchi, Gyangtse town, Shigatse, Chamdo, and so forth.
Generally speaking, the roads from Lhasa to Kathmandu are pretty good and well constructed. And it is instantly obvious that the roads in Tibetare in far better condition than those in Nepal. Not only are the roads smoother but there are also safety barriers around all the bends. So, even it is not so straightforward, it is safe and smooth road. On the Chinese side most of the road is paved except for the side trip to the EBC on which 4WDs are needed. And only the last kilometers to Zhangmu are narrow and built right into steep mountain sides. As of June 2011 the initial stretch down the valley after the Nepali boarder is unpaved, narrow and in pretty bad conditions, but conditions improve at the lower sections.

Common vehicles could run on these tarred roads. Only to those remote mountain areas such as during the Everest Base Camp tour from Tingri to EBC land cruisers will be used for the smooth passing.
