16 Days Cycling across the Himalayas, Lhasa to Kathmandu Bike Adventure

Your tour guide will pick you up at Lhasa airport/train station. Transfer to the Hotel by car. After arriving in Lhasa, you can take a rest and get acclimatized to high altitude. If you feel to go out, then you can go to the Potala Square, where you will enjoy the fountain with different colors and get amazing photos of the Potala and around.

Today's tour will first bring you to the Potala Palace which is the winter palace of the Dalai lama. It was put to use since the 7th Century by the 33rd great king of Tibet. In the afternoon, you will head to Jokhang temple which was founded by the 33rd great king of Tibet in the 7th century. Inside you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. Outside, you can see pilgrims making prostrating in front of Jokhang Temple. Around the temple is Barkhor street, where you can walk with pilgrims and locals.

In the morning, you are going to do preparation for the long trip, to try the fixed bikes, and pack your belongings.

In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery, to see the Monks debating at around 3-5 in the afternoon. In addition, you can tour the Tibetan religious scripture printing house. Inside the monastery, you can see three sand Mandalas and the colorful Rock Painting of Buddha.

Today, your Himalayan biking adventure begins. We leave Lhasa and cycle along the Tsangpo River and Its Bridge to the foot of the Khangbala Pass (3700 m). We will accommodate at Khangbala Village. The road is perfect good and easy, flat. Along the way is the gentle and wide lake of the Lhasa River.

This day's riding is challenging. Facing a 25-kilometer continuous uphill, it took 5-6 hours to ride or carry your bike to walk to the top of the mountain. Be prepared with plenty of drinking water along the way. Highway 307 has been winding up in the valley, and when you reach half mountain, you will have an overlooking the Brahmaputra Valley and when reach the Gangbala Mountain pass (4990m), you will see the panorama of Yamdrotso Lake. Riding along the lakeshore after going downhill all the way, you can rest and stop at the lakeshore along the way, until you stay in Nangartse County.

On this day, you need to climb over the Karola Glacier at 5,110 meters and the Smila Pass at 4,335 meters. While ending the riding along the shore of Lake, the following will be several sections of steep slopes of several kilometers with up and down. Karola Glacier and Manla Dam with green water will continuedly appear in front of you, they are amazing. The last section of today’s riding is flat road all the way to Gyantse.

Today’s riding is easy and relax. It is an idyllic viewing road from Gyantse County to Shigatse City without climbing slopes. The villages are along the way with lush farmlands surrounding. You can stop and rest in the fields at any time even have a pleasant conversation with farmers. If you are interested, you can ride off the road to Shalu Temple.

Deliberately avoid the busy China-Nepal Highway, we look for another plat road with beautiful scenery. This secluded road was built along the Brahmaputra River with farmland and villages dotted on the wide plat ground aside the River. Today's ride starts from Shigatse and ends at Phuntsoling Monastery, which located on half-way of this beautiful road. This Monastery is a very famous among local with a long history and beautiful murals in it.

Today's itinerary is still riding along the Brahmaputra River, with more charming scenery and more villages, you will pass through Tibetan villages and meet more friendly Tibetan farmers. With easy riding, you will have the opportunity to spend leisure time at the shore of the River.

Today is a high-intensity riding with unpredictable weather, as will ride across Gyatso la mountain pass, the highest point on the 318 National Highway at 5248 meters. You may experience four seasons in a day, rain, snow, hail, and heat. However, what makes you exciting is that you can see the first eye of Mount Everest at the mountain pass. The peak stands in sight like the top of an white triangle. After passing the mountain, the road is smooth just like you speed on the road leading to the sky.

We are going to leave National Highway 318, turn south and ride to Mount Everest. Today we need to cross the last mountain to reach Mount Everest - Gawula Pass at 5,200m. At the Gawula, you can see five mountains all above 8,000 meters. They are Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. Gawula Pass is the most spectacular viewing platform on the entire cycling route from Lhasa to Mount Everest. Down to villages called Tashizong to end today journey.

The most exciting day comes, we will arrive the mount Everest Base Camp! From Tashizong to Base Camp is a relatively gentle road and no mountain pass to cross. You may meet some wild animals such as Tibetan antelope and wildebeest enroute, and have a break at Basom Village with a cup of butter tea. Finally, you will arrive at Everest Base Camp and spend a night near Rongpuk Monastery. Congratulations! You made it !

Today we return to the China-Nepal Highway from the base camp of Mt. Everest. The 86km-ride may be a challenging journey for you as the road condition is not such good. However it is absolutely worth to conquer it because of the shocking the scenery. You will ride along the valley road at the foot of the Himalayas all the way. You will feel not lonely as the highest mountains are always accompany you. If you're feeling exhausted, take a ride in our support truck.

Today’Cycling is from Old Tingri to Peokutso Lake, a lake at 4,591m, with stunning view and surrounded by mountains reaching 5,700 to 6,000 meters. The shore surrounding the lake are vast pasture, you will meet nomad people and their cattle.We camp at Pekutso Lake Shore for tonight.

Camp

Today you may need some assistance by our truck as there is no suitable place to spend night from Pekutso Lake to Gyirong Town. Ride as long as you can, the rest part you can seat inside the car. This is the last day you ride on high plateau, because after a short ride up to Gontala Pass (4750 m), you will swiftly ride downhill to Gyirong town with 2,700m elevation. The view is perfect with big gorges aside the road.

Drive only 20km down to Nepal border, we have to say good-bye to you, you successfully complete the highest cycling trip in the world – biking across Himalaya. Our Nepal driver with his jeep will wait you at the Nepal border and escort you to Kathmandu.
