Gyirong Port, the new Sino-Nepal border, finally reopened to International Tourists by the end of Aug, 2017. So instead of taking Kathmandu-Lhasa flight to Tibet, international tourists can again enjoy the adventurous Kathmandu-Lhasa overland journey.

Overview

This tour combines Tibet with Nepal. Starting from Lhasa, the political, economic, cultural center of Tibet, you will head to Tsetang, the cradle of Tibetan civilization, to visit the first monastery, the first palace, the first farmland and the first village in Tibet.

Then we will drive to Shigatse, which has a reputation of the most important city in Shigatse area, the second biggest city in Tibet, and the residence of Panchen Lama via Gyantse, and visit Sakya monastery, known as its fresco and the second Dunhuang.

Afterwards, we arrive in Mt. Everest- the highest peak in the world, where you can appreciate stunning scenery of sunset and starry night sky and Milky Way at the nearest place to sky. If you are lucky enough, you can see Meteor.

Finally, traverse majestic Himalayas to overlook Mt. Shisha pangma, and arrive in the city of temples - Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal via Gyirong Port. Then you will visit Lumbini – the birthplace of Sakyamuni, explore Chitwan- tropical jungle of Nepal, Pokhara tourist sites and the observing platform of Mt. Everest in Nagarkot. You can experience different Mt. Everest from south. The tour ends. 

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lhasa & Acclimation

Transfer to your hotel after arriving in Lhasa airport or train station. From airport to Lhasa city, it only takes half an hour of driving along the Lhasa-airport highway. You will be amazed by the spectacular plateau scenery along the Brahmaputra river.

Normally you will arrive in the late afternoon or evening by train. And 20 minutes of driving will take you to your hotel in Lhasa city. Check in at hotel, and have a good rest to acclimatize the high altitude.

Day 2: Lhasa sightseeing - Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor

In the morning, visit the famous Potala palace and explore the grandest of this myriad chapel. You will appreciate its audience halls, the jeweled and Golden burial chortens (stupa Tombs) of past Dalai Lamas, and tremendous number of Buddhist frescoes, thangkas, combinations of mandala, etc.

Tibet Museum is an important window to introduce the glorious culture of Tibet, and as a free Museum in Lhasa, you should not miss it.

In the afternoon, pay a visit to the holist temple in Tibet, the Johkang Temple, built during Songtsen Gonpo's reign by princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty, 647 A.D, and its famous Barkor Kora.

Day 3: Lhasa Sightseeing - Drepung Monastery/Sera Monastery

Visit two important monasteries in Lhasa, the Drepung and the Sera.

Drepung monastery is situated at the foothill of a mountain and was founded by Jamyang Choeje in 1416. It was once the home to 10000 monks and Ganden podrang in Drepung is famous as it was the government centre and later moved to the famous potala palace during the fifth dalai lama.

After having lunch, continue to visit the Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa's disciple Jamchen Choeje. The most attractive is its Buddhist Scriptures debating held in the courtyard mostly around 3:00 - 5:00 in the afternoon.

Day 4: Lhasa to Tsedang (3500m)

Drive about 4 hours to Tsedang in the morning, which is known as the capital of the ancient Yarlung Kingdom. Take a ferry to cross Yarlung Zangpo River and visit Samye Monastery en-route.

The Samye Monastery is the first temple to be built in Tibet and the first contains three Buddhist jewels of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. With these unique features, this splendid temple has become an attraction for visitors from near and far. Then continue to visit Tsedang.

Day 5: Tsedang Sightseeing - Yambulakhang Palace, Trundruk Monastery

Drive 7kms to visit Yambulakhang Palace, the first building of Tibet which is built in the 2nd century for Tibetan Kings. It situates on a summit of a small hill on the east bank of the Yarlung River.

Then drive to explore the burial tombs of Tibetan Kings. We will also visit Trundruk Monastery in the afternoon.

Day 6: Tsedang to Gyantse

Drive about 300km to Gyantse. Passing by the green farmland of Nyangchu Valley, Yamdrok lake, Karo-la glacier roadside at 4960m, we move westwards to the traditional Tibet town, Gyantse.

The most important attraction for today is Yamdro-tso Lake and Kubum monastery in Gyantse. From the top of the pass Kangpa-la at 4700m high, you can see the fabulous shade of deep turquoise Yamdrok Lake if the weather is clear. Kubum monastery has a 35m-high chorten (stupa) with its white layers trimmed with decorative stripes and its crown-like golden dome.

Day 7: Gyantse-Shigatse-Sakya

After breakfast, drive to Shigtse to visit the largest Monastery in west Tibet, the Tashilunpo monastery. Tashilunpo monastery is one of the six great Gelukpa institutions and was founded in 1447 by a disciple of Tsongkapa, contains the world's largest gilded copper image (26m high) of future god Jampa.

Keep driving to visit Sakya Monastery. The most interesting thing in Sakya sect is that the sect does not believe in reincarnation and the head of Sakya sect will wear white cassock and also marry to give birth.

Day 8: Sakya – Mt. Everest

Drive westwards the Friendship way to Tingri. There is about 30km bumpy road from Tingri to Rongpuk. From Tingri to E.B.C tourists will experience bumpy road, pass the wild grassland, cross the rapids river and high mountains. If the weather is fine, you can have a glimpse of four mountains which are 8000m high or more, that is, Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Mt. Everes (8848m), Mt. Qowowuyag (8201m), Mt Mayalu (8463m).

Day 9: Rongphuk-Gyirong

Drive to Zhangmu. Pass Mount Shishapangma (26,286 feet) on the way and cross two major passes - the Lalung La (16,811 feet) and the Nyalam Ton La, also known as the "pass to hell” at 17,060 feet. Below Nyalam, the road descends steeply into the river valley of the Bhote Kosi. The flourishing border town of Gyirong Port clings to the mountainside with the highway crisscrossing between homes and storefronts.

Day 10: Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi-Kathmandu

Our Guide will drop you off at the border bridge next morning. Walk to cross the border bridge, which is 50m long. Then check in at Nepal side. You can get the Nepal visa upon arrival with 30USD, please prepare one photo at passport size to get Nepal Visa.

The next step, the Nepal tour guide will go across the border bridge to China side which is 50m long to meet you, then you should follow the Nepal tour guide to check in at Nepal side, and drive to your hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 11: Kathmandu City tour

In these days, you will have a guided tour to the famous cultural and historical sites of Kathmandu. Among them, the UNESCO enlisted world heritage sites are the primary places of visit.

Pashupatinath (sacred Hindu temple), Boudhanath (Buddhist Shrine), Swayambhunath (Monkey temple), Bhaktapur Durbar Squire, Patan Durbar Squire, Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Squire, Dharahara (Bhimsen Tower), Tundikhel, Dasaratha Stadium etc. You will have dinner in the hotel in the evening. You can experience night life of Kathmandu till 9 o’clock.

Day 12: Drive Kathmandu to Chitwan 4hrs

After breakfast in Kathmandu, we depart to Chitwan early in the morning. On the way, you enjoy the overwhelming view of rocky hills while travelling along the Trishuli River. We pass through Kurintar (Cable Car station to Manakamana Temple), Muglin Bazaar and reach Narayangadh. We will stay in a luxury hotel after check in there.

After lunch, you will explore Sauraha and the surrounding area of Chitwan and watching Tharu- Cultural Dance in Tharu Village.

Stay overnight at a hotel for remaining adventure in Chitwan the next day you can enjoy.

Day 13: Chitwan National Park exploration

After Breakfast, you will enjoy elephant Safari adventure to watch rare one horn rhino. You will also explore the jungle to view different wildlife including Yellow striped Tiger, deer, and birds of different spices.

After lunch, you will continue jungle walk to observe diverse flora and fauna. Crocodile in Narayani River and many other attractions are there in Chitwan to explore. In the afternoon, we drive back to Kathmandu and stay overnight at a hotel.

Day 14: Drive to Lumbini and Visit the Temples

On this day, we drive for 4 hours to reach Lumbini Area. There you visit Maya Devi Temple, Ashok Pillar, Shanti Deep (Peace Flame), Lumbini Museum, and many other Temples of Buddha.

Make prayers in the Temples, enjoy observing the architecture of the temples, explore the surrounding of Lumbini village and preserved area. In the evening, we stay in a hotel in Bhairahawa.

Day 15: Tilaurakot sightseeing and drive to Pokhara

On this day, we drive to Tilaurakot for sightseeing. It is the homeland of Siddhartha therefore holy place for all the Buddhists. From Tilaurakot we drive to Pokhara through Butwal, Palpa and Syangja. The Siddhartha Highway leads us from Butwal with enjoying scenic beauty of natural landscapes. Travelling above the rivers in a curved way is thrilling experience for most of the passengers.

In the evening, we reach Pokhara where we stay in a hotel. You can visit some sites if the time remains.

Day 16: Pokhara City Exploration

On this day, you will go for hiking to Sarangkot Hill. The view of the city from Sarangkot is fantastic! You can experience paragliding there in Sarangkot.

We get back to Pokhara and explore caves- Mahendra Cave, Mahadev Cave and Chamere Cave and Davis falls, Gorge of Seti River and other sites during the day. In the evening, enjoy boating in Begnas Lake.

You stay overnight at the hotel in Pokhara.

Day 17: Return Kathmandu

On this day, we return back to Kathmandu. We stop in Damauli and explore the bazaar. You will get information with sightseeing of Nepalese language’s renowned Poet and Ramayana’s translator’s birthplace Chudi Ramgha.

In the afternoon, we arrive at Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel. Spare time is to visit missed places of Kathmandu city.

Day 18: Farewell Day

It is the last day of the trip in Nepal for this time. If you have time enough, you can have sightseeing and shopping in the markets. Before 3 hours of scheduled flight, the guide will take you to the airport and get ready for the flight back home.
