Humane Care of Nature Conforms to Tibetan Tradition

Humane Care of Nature Conforms to Tibetan Tradition

Tibetan people could be seen walking leisurely at the Dzongyab Lukhang Park in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. Nevertheless, if you look carefully, you could find that they would avoid stepping on the huge branches on the ground when they pass a tree. They would never throw litter around trees, let alone cutting them down.

Dzongyab Lukhang means "the hall of Naga King behind the palace" in Tibetan language. It is located behind the Potala Palace. It is said when the fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the Potala Palace, soil and stones were fetched here, resulting in a huge puddle. The sixth Dalai Lama builds a temple for the Naga King, god of water. Later, trees have been planted and pavilions and bridges have been built, and a park with the Naga King Temple as its center has been formed.

Thanks to the animism from the ancient religion Bonism, spirits are believed to live in trees around the temple. When people pass by the trees, the elderly would remind the young, "Don't dirty the trees, or the Naga King would punish you by putting ringworm on your face."

Those trees are well protected and treated as lives with soul.

"Protection of trees is to protect nature and human beings themselves. We can say under the influence of animism of Bonism, Tibetan people make a special contribution to protect nature and maintain ecological balance," said Tsewang Rinzin, an expert of Tibetan folklore.
