Tibet to raise subsistence allowance standards

Tibet to raise subsistence allowance standards

Tibet Autonomous Region is expected to allocate nearly 800 million yuan (about 126.24 million dollars) to raise the subsistence allowance standards for urban and rural residents in 2012.

The subsistence allowance standards will increase to 400 yuan (about 63.12 dollars) per month for urban households enjoying the minimum living guarantee and 1,600 yuan (about 252.48 dollars) per year for rural ones.

Meanwhile, the standard will rise from 588 yuan (about 92.79 dollars) to 2,400 yuan (about 378.72 dollars) for local households enjoying the five guarantees (childless and infirm old persons who are guaranteed on proper food, clothing, medical care, housing and funeral expenses).

"Although the increase is not much large, it can indeed solve some living problems," said Tsedrolma, a resident living in a government-subsided apartment of the sunshine community in Lhasa, capital of Tibet.

Every year, Tibet adjusts the subsistence allowance standards on the basis of its economic and social development as well as the improvement of local residents' living standards.

Since the urban subsistence allowance system was established in 1997, its monthly standard has been raised nine times from 130 yuan (about 20.51 dollars) to 400 yuan (about 63.12 dollars).

Since the rural subsistence allowance system was set up in 2007, its annual standard has been raised five times from 800 yuan (about 126.24 dollars) to 1,600 yuan (about 252.48 dollars).
