Tibet to spend heavily on road construction
The regional government has prioritized 13 key projects this year including renovation of a landslide-prone section along the plateau highway linking Tibet with the neighboring Sichuan province and extension of at least three pivotal highways to remote counties, said Tashi Gyatso, a senior official with Tibet's transport department.
Meanwhile, Tibet plans to build more blacktop roads into 411 remote villages and 17 townships, he said.
New roads will also be built to remote monasteries which had little access to traffic, said Tashi Gyatso. "A total of 300 million yuan has been earmarked for these roads."
Last year, Tibet spent 8.5 billion yuan on 15 road projects, extending the region's highways by 4,600 km and building blacktop roads into 20 townships and 273 villages. Tibet now has 63,000 km of road.
According to Tibet's 12th Five-Year Plan on social and economic growth, it will spend 46.174 billion yuan on the road system between 2011 and 2015.
