Cultural Background:
Situated at Qangka Town, Linzhou County, about 100km northeast of Lhasa, Tongtse Mountain is believed to be a sacred mountain in Tibetan Buddhism. It has been a time-honored tradition for Tibetans to do the kora around Tongtse Mountain every 12 years.
People believe that circling Tongtse Mountain 7 times equals making a full circle of holy Tsare Mountain, a divine mountain equally important to Mt.Kailash. Therefore, it is a tradition for Tibetans to do Mt. Kailash Kora in the year of Horse and have Tsare Mountain Kora in the year of Monkey. However, due to the long distance and inconvenient transportation, for the majority of pilgrims and ordinary Tibetan citizens would prefer touring Tongtse Mountain. Many pilgrims will circle this holy mountain even for over hundred times in an entire year to pray for well-being for living creature.
