Tibet’s mother river - Yarlung Tsangpo

As Yarlung Tsangpo Valley bred splendid Tibetan culture and civilization, the Yarlung Tsangpo River is reputed as Tibet’s mother river. The Yarlung Tsangpo River runs through Tibetan plateau like a fierce dragon, breaking through the barriers and wiggling on the roof of the world.

The source of the Yarlung Zangbo River is on the Gyima Yangzong Glacier with an elevation of 5,590 meters in Zongba County in the northern foothills of the Himalayas, belongs to the water system of the Indian Ocean.

The grand river flows from west to east across the southern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, runs through Shigatse, Lhasa, Lhoka and Nyingchi prefectures and finally pour into Bay of Bengal. It also incorporates tributaries including the Nyang Qu River, the Lhasa River, the Nyang River and the Peilung River.

With a length over 2,057km, the Yarlung Tsangpo River is also known as the fifth longest river in China and the largest river in Tibet Autonomous Region. With the drainage area having an average elevation of 4,500 meters, the Yarlung Tsangpo is the highest river in the world.

About 1 million people, or 37 percent of Tibet's total population, live in the area drained by the Yarlung Tsangpo River, where cultivated land amounts to over 150,000 hectares, or 41.67 percent of the region's total. The area is also home to some major cities and towns, including Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyangtse, Tsetang and Bayi. That is why the Yarlung Zangpo River is regarded as the mother river of Tibet.

The Yarlung Tsangpo River also creates many amazing tourist sites on the Tibetan plateau. At first, the river itself is a fabulous sight in Tibet. But normal tourists are not able to enjoy the panoramic view of such a long and large river. Tourists can view the stunning scenery of the Yarlung Tsangpo Valley on the way from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp or make a tour from Lhasa to Samye Monastery.

The most famous tourist site along the Yarlung Tsangpo River is the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. With a sharp contrast of terrains for its peaks and valleys so close to each other, the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.

Spanning from Pelung Town of Pome County to Pad Town of Monling County, the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon Scenic Spot Area, about 200 kilometers long, boasts its open and flat valley, soaring snowcapped mountains and dense primeval forests.
