The spring mountain-climbing activity in Tibet started in April and will end in June, People’s daily reported.

Up to now nearly 300 mountain climbers have arrived at the three base camps of Mt. Qomolangma, Mt. Qowowuyagm, 30 km east of Mt.Qomolangma and Mt. Shishabangma, 120 km to the southeast of Mt.Qomolangma and will conquer the peaks with the elevation of over 8,000 meters, according to Zhang Mingxing, secretary-general of the Mountain Climbing Association of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

"The weather wasn’t very nice with strong wind in the first three days, but it has warmed up these days with a low temperature, though," said Zhang in his inspections between the three base camps.

Up till the present, over 150 climbers have arrived at the base camp of Mt. Qomolangma and 40 respectively at the base camps of Mt. Qowowuyag and Mt. Shishabangma. And some foreign climbing groups will be coming soon, according to Zhang.

There is only one group with six climbers from China who is planning to get to the "top of the world" by late May this year. "This group is in high morale. It has just finished the exercises for adaptation to high-altitude of over 5,800 meters," said Zhang Mingxing. "And it will continue to adapt to the higher altitude in the marching camp and attacking camp before departure. And roads will be repaired and supplies will be shipped."

It is reported that now over 100 staff of the Tibet Mountain Climbing Association, Tibet Sacred Mountain Climbing Exploration Service Co. Ltd, and the National Qomolangma Nature Reserve have been dispatched to the base camps including high-altitude guides, liaison officers, translators and rescuers above 6,500 meters. And some members of the Tibet Mountain Climbing Team will go to provide assistance to the mountain climbing activity around China’s May Day holidays from May 1st to 3rd

"This year Mt. Shishabangma base camp has got access to the signals of China Telecom, so the three base camps have all accessed telecommunications service with Mt. Qomolangma Base Camp covered by electricity," said Zhang. He also warned climbers to keep a respectful, pious and peaceful mind in mountain climbing, obey the guidance of trainers as well as meet the need of the whole group.

The mountain-climbing activity in the spring has brought profitable economic returns for the locals. Last year the total revenue of the Dingri County through yak transport and special food processing reached nearly one million yuan, said Zhang Mingxin. By this spring, it has reaped profits of more than 300,000 yuan(except home inn and catering businesses). Zhang expected that it will bring about several hundred thousand yuan when it is decamped, which will, to some extent, contribute to poverty alleviation for the local areas.

Tibet boasts rich mountain resources with five peaks of over 8,000 meters including Mt. Qomolanma, 70 odd peaks of over 7,000 meters, nearly 1000 peaks of over 6,000 meters, which have attracted a big number of mountain climbing enthusiasts from home and abroad, as reported by Xinhua.
