The government of the Tibet Autonomous Region will strive to equip 95 percent of the region’s communities and all of its townships with Tibetan clinics and pharmacies by 2020, the regional health department said on Wednesday.

Additionally, more than 75 percent of villages in the region will have Tibetan medical clinics by 2020, according to the department.

By the end of 2013, the region had 30 public Tibetan medical institutes, one Tibetan medical college and three privately owned Tibetan hospitals, it said.

Currently, the counties without Tibetan hospitals have departments of Tibetan medicine in county hospitals. More than 75 percent of township clinics and more than 13 percent of village clinics provide Tibetan medical services, the health department said.

By end of 2013, the number of Tibetan hospital beds in the region had reached 1,364, accounting for 13.5 percent of all hospital beds in the region. Additionally, Tibetan medical staff numbering 2,232 accounted for 14.8 percent of all medical staff in the region.

"As 10 more species of Tibetan medicinal herbs being highly endangered, the government of Tibet has invested more than 30 million yuan ($4.8 million) in 18 medicinal herb planting bases within the region," said Pema Yangdron, an official from the health department.

"We are in the process of a survey to clarify the condition of Tibetan medicinal resources in 26 counties of the region, and it will help us better know the situation of the distribution and the quantity of Tibetan medicinal herbs within the region," Pema said.
