According to the latest Tibet travel news, China East Airlines will launch first non-stop flight between Lhasa and Shanghai since July, 2013. Travellers to Tibet will no longer have to have a stopover at Chengdu Airport.
At present, most flights to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, would make a stopover at Chengdu, an international city in west China. So do the Shanghai to Lhasa flights. It usually takes around 7 hours to fly from Shanghai to Lhasa, with a stopover at Chengdu Shangliu Airport. However, the non-stop flight from Shanghai to Lhasa will only take 5 hours, saving as long as 2 hours compared with the current flights.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport is one of the highest civil airports in the world. Due to the harsh and changeable climate, and complex topography around the Gonggar Airport, special air type is required. During the flight test, airbus A330-200 is finally chosen as the non-flight from Shanghai to Lhasa.
Except travelling from Shanghai to Lhasa by air, tourists can also take a train to Tibet from Shanghai, but it takes much longer time. At present, the Shanghai to Lhasa train takes over 40 hours, however, tourists can enjoy more interesting landscape in west China by train to Tibet. It is also much cheaper than taking flight to Lhasa from Shanghai.
