Pure Lake Namtso in Tibet

Lake Namtso is widely known by both domestic and overseas travelers due to its pure elements, pure water in it, pure sky over it, pure snow mountains surrounding it. The pure Lake Namtso originates from its pure environment.

A research report by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) indicates that the atmosphere surrounding Namtso has reached up to the standard of the South Pole.

Cong Zhiyuan, researcher of the CAS said, "The particulate content of this area is quite low, and the Atmospheric aerosol optical thickness (AOD) is 0.029 on an annual average, which makes it a place with the cleanest atmosphere and can even be compared to that of the South Pole."

According to Kang Shichang, head of the Namtso Station of the CAS, the reasons behind this are good vegetation coverage without large-scale industrial and agricultural activities. Local residents live off pasturing and depend on solar energy and cows dung for fuels instead of coal. Besides, there is limited modern transportation. Thus the pure air quality can represent the natural atmospheric condition in the northern hemisphere.

Namtso, or the Nam, located in Damxung County of Tibet Autonomous Region of China, is the world’s highest lake with an elevation of 4,718 meters and a surface area covering 2,000 square kilometers. It is an ideal spot for environmental monitoring as it flows through various types of typography such as glacier, grassland and wetland.

The Namtso has ranked one of the top ten famous tourist sites in China. Of course, it is a must-visit site for travelers making a Tibet tour.
