Travel to Tibet in January

Though January is the coldest month of Tibet, travel to Tibet in January will also bring you much fun and more experience on Tibetan culture and customs because Tibetan people would celebrate some grand festivals and do various religious activities. In additional, Tibet sees fewer tourists during this month, so you can have more time to explore Tibetan temples and other tourist sites.

Lhasa winter tour
Lhasa sees flocks of Tibetan people from other places of Tibet.

If you travel to Tibet in January of 2013, you will get a chance to celebrate Tsang New Year or Farmers’ New Year with Tibetan people in Shigatse Area of Tibet. You can see groups of farmers dancing and singing around their fields to celebrate their harvest of the last year and pray for a good harvest of the coming year in the countryside of Shigatse.

Lhasa tour winter
Tibetan pilgrims flock to Lhasa during winter.

As the 2013 Tibetan New Year is coming in February, large amount of Tibetan pilgrims flock into Lhasa to visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and other holy sites in Lhasa. Especially the Jokhang temple which is the most important temple in Tibet embraces more pilgrims in winter than in summer. The reason is perhaps that summer is the busy farming season in Tibet; while, in winter, the Tibetans from various regions all come to the Jokhang Temple for pilgrimage in their slack season.

Lots of Tibet pilgrims gather at Jokhang square everyday in winter.

Since January is widely regarded as the low season of Tibet tourism for its cold weather, the transportation and accommodation would be much available and the scenic spots would not be so crowded compared to the peak seasons. Thus, you would get more time to explore the tourist sites.
