The largest pile of Mani stones in Tibet

Once you travel to Tibet, you will find Mani stones everywhere throughout Tibetan areas. According to Tibet Tourism Bureau, the largest pile of Mani stones in Tibet is found in Nima Village of Nagqu Prefecture at northern Tibet. It is said that the Mani stone mound is comprised of over 200 million Mani stones after hundreds of years’ accumulation.

These Mani stones are different in color, size and shape, even in material. The Mani stones are generally made from limestone, silicious stone and marble, inscribed with the Six-Syllable Mantra of Avalokiteshvara, a major Bodhisattva or god in Buddhism who embodies the compassion of all Buddhists, as a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism.

In fact, the size of Mani stone mound was very very small. In Tibetan tradition, if a person passes by the mani stones, he/she would walk around the mani stones for a circle while chanting, and then add a mani stone onto the mound. Therefore, the size of the mound becomes bigger and bigger year by year.
