Mid-autumn Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. With more and more Han people moving to Tibet, Mid-autumn Festival also has become popular in Tibet in recent years. Thus, Tibet celebrates Mid-autumn Festival, too.
Various moon-cakes have been displayed on the shelves several days before the holiday in local supermarkets, making the stores full of festive atmosphere.
According to local people, mooncakes of this year are much simpler without excessive packages that have been used in the past few years, and many gift boxes of different brands have been in sales and are widely welcomed.
In fact, Tibetans don’t have the tradition of celebrating Mid-autumn Festival. Instead of it, they have an unique festival for family reunion-Evils Dispelling Festival on December 29 of Tibetan Calendar, on which day Tibetan families gather together to cleanse evils away and welcome the new year.
On the other hand, in Tibetans’ mind, the days when moon is full are perceived as auspicious, thus many religious festivals and horse races are held on these days. Now more and more Tibetans begin to celebrate Mid-autumn Festival with the increasing cultural communications with Han and other ethnic groups. It is normal that Tibetans receive greetings from Han colleagues and friends during Tibetan traditional festivals, and will return their best wishes when encountering festivals of Han ethnic group. Festivals of various ethnic groups will be celebrated in Tibet harmoniously.
