In the morning of April 20, 2013, a disastrous 7-magnitude earthquake occurred in Lushan County, Ya'an City, Sichuan Province neighboring Tibet Autonomous Region, but
Tibet tour is not affected by the Yaan Earthquake or Lushan Earthquake. Both the Chengdu to Lhasa trains and Chengdu to Lhasa flights are in normal operation except that the road from Chengdu to Lhasa is interrupted by landslide caused by the quake. Travelers to Tibet are highly recommended to take a flight or
train to Tibet instead of travelling to Tibet by overland from Sichuan.
Train from Chengdu to Lhasa
The railway from Chengdu to Lhasa does not pass through the quake-hit area, thus the
train from Chengdu to Lhasa is in normal operation after the April 20 Earthquake in Yaan. The Chengdu to Lhasa train starts from Chengdu at 20:55 every other day and arrives in Lhasa at 16:35 on the third day. As the best time to visit Tibet in 2013 has already started, it is best to reserve train tickets to Lhasa in advance, otherwise it will be very hard to get a ticket, especially soft sleeper tickets.
Flights from Chengdu to Lhasa
The Chengdu Shuangliu Airport is not affected by the Yaan earthquake and all the
flights from Chengdu to Lhasa are in normal operation after the Lushan earthquake or Yaan quake. There are many flights from Chengdu to Tibet every day. Some of flights start from Chengdu and fly to Lhasa directly. Some of them start from other cities of mainland China and make a stopover at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport. It is very easy to travel to Tibet by air from Chengdu. It is also advisable to book air tickets to Tibet in advance during the peak tourism season of Tibet (April to October).
In a word, travellers to Tibet can carry out their
Tibet tour plan smoothly after the earthquake. But do not forget your Tibet permit before starting to Tibet. Tibet permit is a must for foreigners to board the train and flight to Tibet. It is easy to be applied in 2013 thanks to the new policy on
Tibet travel permit 2013.
