Mt. Kailash or Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan is the most scared mountain in Tibet while the 4th month in Tibetan calendar is the most scared month. Besides, the grandest religious festival, Saga Dawa Festival is celebrated during the scared month. It must be interesting to explore Tibet’s holiest place during its holiest month. So travel to Tibet in this May.
Mt. Kailash
The Mount Kailash may be a little known in the western world, but it is one of the most sacred places on earth and the holiest spot in Asia, especially for Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon faiths.
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Mount Kailash is believed to be the home of Buddha Demchok who represents supreme bliss.
According to Hinduism, Lord Shiva, the destroyer of ignorance and illusion, resides at the summit of a legendary mountain named Kailāsa, where he sits in a state of perpetual meditation along with his wife Pārvatī.
In Jainism, Kailash is also known as Meru Parvat or Sumeru. The Bön, a religion which predates Buddhism in Tibet, maintain that the entire mystical region and the nine-story Swastika Mountain is the seat of all spiritual power.
The Tibetan name for the mountain is Gang Rinpoche. Gang is the Tibetan word for snow peak analogous to alp or himal; rinpoche is an honorific meaning "precious one" so the combined term can be translated "precious jewel of snows".
Mt. Kailash is remote and deep in Ngari, the westernmost part of the Tibetan plateau, but it is a massively significant geographic place in Asia. Four major rivers of Asia have their sources in the Kailash area, Yarlung Tsangpo or Brahmaputra River, Mapcha Tsangpo or Ganges River, Langchen Tsangpo or Sutlej River and Senge Tsangpo or Indus River.
Saga Dawa Festival
Saga Dawa is one of the most important and cherished Tibetan Buddhist festivals, held each year on the full moon day of the fourth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar, to celebrate Sakyamunis enlightenment. This astounding festival is also known as the Festival for Releasing Living Things, and during this festival, Tibetan people do not eat meat and kill any living things in the fourth month of the Tibetan year in order to concentrate their efforts on worshipping.
A legend says on the 15th day of the fourth month of the Tibetan year Sakyamuni was born, became a Buddha and died. On this day each year, the people will dress in their splendid attire and sing and dance and have a picnic or gathering in Lingka or walk the Kora around the Kailash.
The pilgrims walk and prostrate around the Mt. Kailash path of 55km Kailash Parbat known to them as Meru in ice and stone. There is a strong belief among Hindus and Buddhist that a single walk around the holy mountain would wash away all the sins of a lifetime.
