On the line of Xining - Golmud Railway in Guanjiao Mountain, a new Guanjiao Tunnel on Qinghai-Tibet Railway was completed successfully on June 18, 2013, after 6-year hard work. It is dual bores, double track rail tunnel. The total length of the tunnel is 32.645 km, which makes it the longest railway tunnel in China and the world's longest railway tunnel at high altitude. The tunnel is bored in difficult geological conditions and high altitude exceeding 3,300 metres (10,800 ft) above sea level.
The second line of Xining-Golmud railway of Qinghai-Tibet railway covers a full length of 818km, and is the only railway connecting Qinghai Province and Tibet Autonomous Region. Its construction will provide a big boost to the economic development of Qinghai Province and Tibet Autonomous Region.
The New Guanjiao Tunnel was designed for two parallel single-track tunnel with speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour. The total construction duration was projected to be 5 years, but the construction was shut down for over half a year due to capital shortage.
The 4km long old Guanjiao Tunnel will retire once the new tunnel is opened. When it opens to traffic, the run time of
Tibet train will be shortened by two hours.
