Living Fossil Of Tibetan Culture--Tibetan Opera
Tibetan Opera, also called Ace Lhamo in Tibetan language, is a very ancient art form which has developed over centuries. Hailed as the “living fossil of traditional Tibetan culture”, it has boosted in Tibet’s civil art field for more than 600 years, even 400 years longer than the well-known Peking Opera. It is so welcome in Tibet that the Tibetan Opera has become a conspicuous identity for Tibetan people. There is a local saying that says wherever you find Tibetan people, you will find Tibetan Opera.
Like other ethnic minorities, Tibetan people also have their own cultural characteristics. The special opera coming from the highest plateau in the world is simple yet also passionate. Anyone who has ever listened or ever watched the performance will be definitely astonished by the art. It was, is and always will be the center of Tibetan people’s lives. When it comes to Aug. And Sept., hundreds and thousands of local residents will dress up their best and the most beautiful clothes, watching the Tibetan Opera together under the bright sunshine.
Dating back to early ages, Tibetan Opera mainly told the stories of local life of Tibetans. As time goes by, in order to demonstrate the versatility, artists add more and more factors in.
The blue-masked Tibetan Opera dance is a new art form integrated with Tibetan Opera. There was a dance competition on Sept. 18, 2013 in Tibet broadcasted via Tibet TV Station in Lhasa. After their professional show, the dance performed by 11 dancers won the 1st prize.
Known as “the living fossil”, Tibet Opera was put on the world heritage list by the UNESCO in 2009.
